Some twisted genius (or a mere scrooge who's grown sick and tired of all the festivities...) has expertly re-cut the trailer for the Christmas classic, Elf, into a thriller movie, and it is both completely ridiculous and a little spooky at the same time.

Keep scrolling to watch the revised trailer, though be warned: It may completely ruin Christmas for you.

We all know and love the tale of Buddy the Elf.

via: IMDB

Released in theatres in 2003, Elf quickly became one of the most iconic Christmas movies of all time.

Will Ferrel plays the role of charismatic man-child, Buddy the Elf...

Who, as a baby, was accidentally transported to the North Pole.

Subsequently, he was raised alongside Santa's other elves...

And grew up believing he was a real elf, despite his human-like size.

But, as he becomes an adult...

Buddy just can't shift the feeling that he doesn't quite fit in with the other elves.

So he decides to track down his real family.

Who just so happen to live in New York City.

The movie then follows Buddy's journey from the North Pole to the Big Apple...

As he excitedly hunts down his real dad... All while dressed in his bright green elf suit, of course.

Buddy's happy-go-lucky attitude sticks out like a sore thumb in the big city.

And the confused elf gets himself into many hilarious encounters with disgruntled New Yorkers.

His biological family included.

Buddy manages to track down his real dad, who is married with a young son.

The man-sized elf is integrated into the family...

And the rest of the movie shows how Buddy distills the "Christmas Spirit" back into the scrooges of New York.

So, as you can imagine...

The film is incredibly Christmassy, with pretty much no scary element about it.

Well, until now, that is.

What if I told you that Elf has taken a rather spooky twist in recent years?

I know, it all sounds a little bizarre, doesn't it?

via: IMDB

Because the scariest Elf gets is when a wild racoon attacks an unsuspecting Buddy - And even that part is still brilliantly comical.

Well, Mashable's YouTube channel, CineFix, has decided to properly crank up the spook in the novelty family movie...

And have created something rather sinister in the process.

The revised trailer for the movie features the familiar clips...

via: YouTube

But with much creepier lighting and darker, more sinister music.

And, rather than focusing on the festive elements of the original movie...

via: YouTube

The new trailer plays up on Buddy's dad's reluctance to embrace him as part of the family.

Scenes of Buddy desperately trying to connect with his dad are seen in a much different light...

via: YouTube

And, rather than being comical, they appear to be desperately sad.

And Buddy's mental health begins to be questioned...

via: YouTube

Though Buddy's sanity was a recurring theme throughout the original movie, this revised trailer begins to portray it in a more severe and psychotic light...

The narrative suggests that he was "taken as a child."

And the words, "Tortured", "Twisted", and "Broken", flash up in between clips. Not quite the jolly, Christmassy tale of a lovable elf running through New York anymore, is it?

You can watch the full trailer here.

Though be warned: It may ruin the movie for you forever.

I'd rather remember Buddy like this, thank you...
