The legendary Spike Lee actor, Thomas Jefferson Byrd, has tragically died.

Byrd, who appeared in such films as  ClockersGet on the BusBamboozled, not only passed away, but was found murdered in Atlanta.

Thomas Jefferson Byrd has tragically died.

The iconic actor, Thomas Jefferson Byrd has tragically died after he was found murdered in Atlanta.

Byrd was perhaps best known for his work with Spike Lee.

He appeared in such films as Clockers, Get on the Bus, Bamboozled, Red Hook Summer, and Chi-Raq - all iconic Spike Lee films which established a name for Lee and Byrd in movie history.

As you are probably aware.

Spike Lee is one of the biggest directors in the world.

He's made some of the most legendary films of all time.

Ranging from Malcolm X, to BlacKkKlansman, to 25th Hour.

Spike himself confirmed the news.

He shared a photo of Byrd, a still from his role in the 1995 film Clockers, as the character Errol Barnes.

Spike captioned the post:

I’m So Sad To Announce The Tragic Murder Of Our Beloved Brother Thomas Jefferson Byrd Last Night In Atlanta,Georgia.

"Tom Is My Guy."

Here Below You See Him As The Frightening Character Errol Barnes In CLOCKERS. Brother Byrd Also Did His Thang In My Joints- CHI-RAQ,SWEET BLOOD OF JESUS, RED HOOK SUMMER,BAMBOOZLED,HE GOT GAME,GET ON THE BUS,GIRL 6 And CLOCKERS.

"May We All Wish Condolences And Blessings To His Family. Rest In Peace Brother Byrd."

Lee also shared a video of Byrd in Clockers.  He wrote:

But Byrd wasn't only an actor on the big screen.

He also made a huge name for himself through his theater and television work too.

On the stage he was in some award winning performances.

Such as the San Diego Repertory Theater's award-winning performance of Spunk.

He was also nominated for Broadway's 2003 Tony Award as Best Actor.

For his stunning revival of August Wilson's Ma Rainey's Black Bottom.

Tributes have been pouring in for the actor following the news of his murder.

Writer, Brandon Caldwell, wrote:
Long live the art created by Thomas Jefferson Byrd, a captivating character actor in spike lee films and famously, the antagonist who helped set the plot of set it off in motion. “IF YOU DON’T WANNA WORK FOR LUTHERS!" A tragedy he was murdered in Atlanta.

Rest In Peace to the legendary Thomas Jefferson Byrd seen here with me and the iconic Spike Lee. I had the honor of working with Mr. Byrd in CHI-RAQ but enjoyed much of his work.

A third paid tribute to the actor.

They wrote:
RIP Thomas Jefferson Byrd. One of Spike Lee’s go-to artists. Byrd’s screen characters always made a strong impression. Such singular choices. Like in HE GOT GAME, I remember his pimp character was film literate and had a funny way of saying “familiarity." Movies live forever.

Spike Lee paid yet another tribute

In a third Instagram post, Spike proved just how good an actor Byrd really was by sharing another clip from one of his films. Spike wrote:
This Is One Of My Fav Scenes In CLOCKERS. With KRS-1 Blasting OUTTA HERE Our Late,Great Brother Thomas Jefferson Byrd As ERROL BARNES Meets His Demise From A Young Black Child.

Byrd was tragically murdered.

Atlanta Police explained to TMZ, that they were called to reports of an injured person at at 1:45am Saturday.

There they found Byrd.

He was found unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds.

Emergency workers pronounced him dead.

He was pronounced dead at the scene - with the cause of death being multiple gunshot wounds to the back.

Homicide detectives are investigating.

At the time of writing, very little is known about the circumstances of Byrd's death, but detectives are investigating.

So tragic.
