The legendary actress, Nichelle Nichols, has died at the age of 89.

Nichols was best known for her work as Lt. Nyota Uhura in Star Trek.

Nichols played the role of Lt. Nyota Uhura in Star Trek: The Original Series and six franchise films.

Her death was confirmed in an Instagram post by her son Kyle Johnson, who wrote:

“Her light however, like the ancient galaxies now being seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from, and draw inspiration. Hers was a life well lived and as such a model for us all.”

Her role on Star Trek also shattered boundaries for coloured people on television with her character’s kiss with William Shatner’s Captain James Kirk breaking ground for being one of the first interracial kisses ever aired on television.

It’s believed that Nichols died from natural causes.
