A student from North Carolina was denied his diploma after he wore a Mexican flag draped over his graduation gown...
And ever since the story made headlines, people have been giving their opinions on the matter.
It's insane to me that they reject a Mexican flag but are all about stealing Mexican culture. Explain Taco Tuesday without mentioning race.— kalduke23 (@Kalduke23) June 5, 2021
Same thing happened at my school. Graduation is supposed to be formal. This just screams “going to a party”. Not the best look. I don’t think it was because of the flag itself, it’s probably just because he didn’t follow the dress code.— Will DiBattista (@WillyDiBa7) June 5, 2021
There was a dress code. He ignored it. That's all this was about. I am gay and if a student wrapped himself in a pride flag, that too would be against the dress code and inappropriate. The ceremony was for them all and he disrespected the dress code and the other students.— Mac (@Mac88600499) June 6, 2021
I’m embarrassed to say I’m from the United States. This country is now equated with hate, racism, xenophobia, homophobia, and conspiracy theories.— Elisa Pacelli (@senseidai) June 5, 2021
That young man did nothing wrong. The principal ruined what was supposed to be a joyous occasion.
If some white kid did this with an Italian or Irish flag, GUARANTEED this would not be the reaction.— Mancy (@corn_muffin19) June 5, 2021
Some mixed emotions about this. Principal clearly withheld the diploma for arbitrary (likely racist) reasons. Yet, I've always had a difficult time with someone displaying a foreign flag at a "formal" event (regardless of the flag). He's not right but she's DEFINITELY wrong.— Cesar Hernandez (@cesarhdz) June 5, 2021
Also, no matter how anyone feels about this guy wearing a Mexican flag...— walker (@fhearghuismphay) June 5, 2021
Withholding his diploma is theft
Withholding his diploma has absolutely nothing to do a dress code policy the school says he violated!
Give him his diploma immediateiy
How much fuss would there have been if a white kid wore an Irish or Italian flag. Answer: none.— DOOP (@SouthBrewski) June 5, 2021
Disgusting choice by the principal. I hope they hire an attorney and sue her into oblivion. There were choices to be made here. Never forget: she’s the elder and needs to respect her student population m- their culture/community/history- this could have been a one and done event.— Sean Thorne (@SeanThorne1) June 5, 2021
They should have asked to take it off before he entered the line to get his diploma. Instead they belittle him. But remember rules are rules. It would have been better if the situation been corrected before he entered the event.— Roy c (@bayarealawyers) June 6, 2021
Congratulations to Ever for doing the hard work of earning his HS diploma! The school district's reaction to this young man showing pride for his family heritage can only be described as xenophobia.— Keith Bearden (@lkbearden1962) June 5, 2021
Ever Lopez was denied his diploma after allegedly violating Asheboro High School's graduation dress code.
The eighteen-year-old from North Carolina decided to drape a Mexican flag over himself.
Speaking to ABC News, the teen said this:
"When I got up there I went for the handshake and I wasn't thinking nothing of it and I heard her say, 'You can't wear that.' And I was in shock and confused. I was like, 'What?' She was like, 'The flag. You can't wear that.'"
He continued, saying he wore the flag to honor his family as he's the first to graduate from high school in his family.
"It means everything to me," Lopez told the outlet. "My parents, my whole family, is from over there. I did it for them because they had a rough childhood; they didn't get the scholarship that I got, or they didn't get to go to school as I did. So... representing my flag and getting a diploma was really important to me because I was basically doing it for my family."
"I don't know why I should apologize when it should be heard, because I did nothing wrong," Lopez said.
Lopez's family and friends have been protesting outside of the school, as the school has allegedly withheld his diploma but the school has said that it has been available to collect since Friday.
Afterward graduation, Lopez's family was escorted off the school property "after a request was made by Principal [Penny] Crooks," Asheboro police told ABC News.
Officers were working the graduation in "an approved off-duty capacity" and removed them.
Asheboro City schools released a statement in which they outlined the graduation dress code that was shared with students ahead of time.
And "wearing of a flag of any kind is a violation of the dress code."
He also told ABC News that no one ever discussed that bringing a flag wouldn't be permitted.
An online petition has also garnered more than 150,000 signatures as of today.
In the Livestream Facebook video posted on social media, students could be seen in their graduation outfits with various little tweaks...

But Lopez stood out with his flag.
Since the news went viral, the school has announced that it has been receiving threats via email.
"I'm gonna shoot up this school if you don't give that young man his diploma," said one of them, according to the Asheboro Police Department.
"Te Asheboro Police Department is investigating 9 additional emails, for a total of 10, that have been sent to school employees via email threatening violence against the school and/or the employee," the department continued.
The school then released a statement regarding the incident, going into more detail about Lopez.
"This incident is not about the Mexican flag. Students were encouraged to express their identity by decorating their mortar boards. A number of students followed the protocol and had the Mexican flag and other representations appropriately displayed during the ceremony."
The school district also added this:
