Study Finds Most Women Like Their Best Friend More Than Their Husband | 22 Words

Female friendships are a force to be reckoned with. We support each other, whether it's during success, failure, or heartbreak. Friendship is a bond that should never be overlooked or underestimated. Especially as it turns out that most women like their best friend more than their husband.

From the Spice Girls to the cast of Friends, from Game of Thrones to the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, let's take a look at the best female friendships out there.

But first, is it true that women prefer their best friend to their husbands?

Over 50% of women apparently like their best friend more than their husband.

Champneys Health Spa interviewed one-thousand five-hundred and seventeen women in the UK and over 50% said that they prefer to hang out with their best friend than their husband. What are the reasons for this then?

Communication is essential.

When asked why they prefer their best friend, 57% of women said that they can talk about everything with their bestie and 45% said that she listens more. Marriages take a lot of work and they can put a considerable amount of pressure on all parties involved. Having a friend that you can talk about it all with can be a major help in keeping the relationship going. Sometimes you just need to vent to get it all out of your system, and that's what besties are for.

Girls just wanna have fun.

41% of the women interviewed said that they preferred hanging with their best friend because she enjoys the same things and 39% said that it's because their bestie makes them they laugh until they cry. It doesn't matter how well you get on with your partner, it's always going to be with your best friend that you end up in fits of hysterics. And, if you like the same things, you can do activities that you both enjoy together. It's hard to compete with that.

There's often shared history between besties.

Partners come and go, but friends are there for life. When a relationship turns sour, it's always the best friend that makes everything seem alright. 29% of women interviewed said that they go further back with their best friend than they do with their partners and that they can truly be themselves with their BFF. Obviously, marriage is important and it's wonderful, but if you already have your person, she's not going to magically disappear just because you've fallen in love. Your best friend has seen you at your very worst, and you know she'll always love you, despite it all.

Sometimes best friends are just better.

28% of women said that their best friends give better advice than their husbands. This is probably because they come at life from a similar angle. It can be hard for men to compete with a woman's outlook on women's issues. Meanwhile, 26% said that their best friends are less irritating than their partners. What can we say? In many ways, our besties are our true soul mates. With that in mind, let's take a look at some of the closest female friendships out there, and there's only one place that we can start.

Starks stick together.

Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams have been starring together on Game of Thrones for eight years. They've been playing sisters, Sansa and Arya Stark, since they were just fifteen and fourteen years old respectively, so it's no wonder that they are so close! They've been through a lot together and refer to each other as sisters and soul mates. This is the sort of friendship that people dream of. They met at a similar age to Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz, who we'll look at later in the list. Could these be two of the future Charlie's Angels?

From Disney to Coachella.

Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale were both stars on Disney's High School Musical. They played singing rivals, Gabriella Montez and Sharpay Evans. While Vanessa Hudgens has been in a number of movies since, including the Christmas Netflix movie, The Princess Switch, and the upcoming Bad Boys 3, Ashely Tisdale's career has been a little quieter since her days on The Suite Life of Zack and Cody. But they've remained besties throughout it all.

Australia's finest remain close in Hollywood.

When Naomi Watts was fourteen she moved with her mother and brother from England out to Australia. It was there that she began acting, and it was also there that she met her best friend, Nicole Kidman; they were auditioning for the same bikini commercial and shared a cab ride home. In 1991 they starred together in the movie, Flirting, and since then they have both seen their careers soar. Through it all, they have supported and encouraged each other and remain best friends to this day.

Sometimes friendships hit a bump in the road.

Okay, so Kylie Jenner and Jordyn Woods are technically at a low point in their friendship right now, after Jordyn was caught with Kylie's big sister, Khloe's, partner. However, that doesn't change the fact that they've been super close besties for almost a decade. They are almost sure to make up again soon, and, presumably, it will be around the time that Keeping Up With The Kardashians is struggling with its viewing numbers.

Cara and Riri are how friends should be.

Rihanna and Cara Delevingne first met at a fashion week five years ago, and they've never looked back. They even starred together in Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. It only takes one look at these photos to see that theirs is a true friendship and not one that's just for the cameras! And we think we can see something similar between Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone too. Check them out together below.

Ashley Benson and Shay Mitchelle are perfect work wives.

Okay, so Cara Delevingne doesn't have a husband, but she does have a girlfriend, Ashley Benson, and it seems like they both value their friendships with other women highly. The cast of Pretty Little Liars have always been tight, but Ashley Benson and Shay Mitchelle are particularly close. We can certainly relate to that feeling of loss when we no longer get to work with our best friend every day.

Often, the best friendships start while we are still young.

Millie Bobby Brown, who plays Eleven in the Netflix hit TV show, Stranger Things, is best friends with Maddie Ziegler, who first found fame on the reality TV show, Dance Moms. They seem to have a pure friendship, involving trips to Harry Potter World and sleepovers. No doubt, if they stay friends, they'll be there for each other through their first drunken nights, their first hangovers, and their first heartbreaks.

Women work together and support each other.

Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz first met when they were aged fourteen and sixteen respectively, similar to Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner. They worked together on Charlie's Angels and have remained firm friends throughout the years. From this Instagram post alone it's easy to see how much these two women love and support each other. It's important that we remember to appreciate and value female friendships, especially when the media so often tries to create drama between successful women.

We all need someone to be silly with.

Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling starred together in A Wrinkle In Time and have been close ever since. They are known for quite different roles usually, with Resse Witherspoon starring in Cruel Intentions, Legally Blond, Wild, and Walk the Line, for which she received an Oscar.  Mindy Kaling is better known for her work on TV sitcoms such as The Office and The Mindy Project. But they hit it off on set during A Wrinkle in Time and have been close ever since. Could this be a precursor to Mindy starring in Big Little Lies? Keep reading to hear about some of Reese Witherspoon's co-stars from Friends further down!

From dancing on screen to dancing on stage.

Jennifer Dewan and Jennifer Lopez have a lot in common, beyond sharing a first name. Principally, they are both amazing dancers. So it's no wonder that they wanted to work together on World of Dance. And they are not the only friends to work together. Take a look at who else gets to work with their best friend on multiple projects further down!

Jen and Audrey have stayed pals for life.

Busy Phillips and Michelle Williams first met on set when they both starred in Dawson's Creek. Since then Busy Phillips has starred in a lot of TV shows and movies, including Cougar Town, Made of Honour, and I Feel Pretty. Michelle Williams has also starred in numerous hit movies, including Blue Valentine, My Week with Marilyn and Manchester By The Sea. Through it all, they've known that they can rely on each other to understand what they're going through.

We all have a friend like Jennifer Lawrence.

Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone have been best friends for a few years, after spending a year messaging, but never meeting. Not only are they there for each other at big events like the Oscars, they're also there to do normal things, like hanging out with each other. Who needs men when you've got a best friend like this?

Enemies on screen, besties off screen.

Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning both started acting professionally at a young age, so they understand each other in a way that other people couldn't possibly. They have starred in four movies together, including three Twilight movies wherein they were mortal enemies. Don't worry though, they get on super well IRL.

The queens of a strong friendship.

Queen Latifah and Jada Pinkett Smith first met right at the beginning of their careers, when they were both still teenagers. Jada was introducing eighteen-year-old Queen Latifah as the opening act for Public Enemy at a club in Baltimore. They then starred in Set It Off together and have remained friends through the years. They got to act together again in Girls Trip a couple of years ago too! These two look like they have such fun together.

From sorority to friends for life.

Emma Roberts and Lea Michele starred in Scream Queens together, along with Abigail Breslin, Nick Jonas, and Jamie Lee Curtis. The show is based on a serial killer taking action against a sorority, which means that there were a lot of girls on set - it looks like it would have been super fun to shoot. Emma Roberts and Lea Michele have maintained their friendship since then and often spend time together. Bonds that are formed on set can often be the strongest, it appears.

Salma Hayek and Penelope Cruz.

Salma Hayek and Penelope Cruz are well known for the love that they share for each other. They are always super supportive and it's empowering to hear how well they speak of each other. This is how friendships should be. It shows that women don't have to be rivals; they can help and be there for each other (even if Salma Hayek did get the wrong day for Penelope Cruz' birthday).

Friendships can survive royal thrones.

Meghan Markle and Priyanka Chopra first met when Priyanka was filming Quantico up in Montreal, which is near Meghan's old base, Toronto, where she filmed Suits. The two quickly hit it off, bonding over their love of fashion. While they have both become incredibly famous, in part because of their famous husbands (Prince Harry and Nick Jonas), the two remain supportive of each other. Priyanka often speaks out against Meghan's critics, who reduce her to an accessory for the man she has married. We all need friends like this, regardless of how famous we are!

It's good to have friends that truly get us.

Liv Tyler and Kate Hudson went to school together. As they both had famous parents (Aerosmith frontman, Steven Tyler and actress, Goldie Hawn), it's no wonder that they got on well. Their families are close friends, and they often say they are more like sisters than friends. It's easy to believe that when they've known each other for so long.

As if we weren't already jealous of these three!

Jennifer Anniston had a huge birthday party earlier this year; anyone who's anyone seemed to get an invite and Kate Hudson posted these amazing pictures with Gwyenth Paltrow and the birthday lady herself. We all need friends that we can just kick back and have fun with. Of course, they're not the only famous friends that Jen has.

Rachel and Monica have got nothing on these two.

Friends has been on our screens since 1994, and one of the biggest draws for the show was the dynamics between the friends. Since then, their friendship has gone from strength to strength. Courteney Cox was the maid of honor at Jen's wedding to Justin Theroux, and Jen is godmother to Courteney's daughter, Coco. And they're not the only Friends stars to remain friends!

Monica and Phoebe are friends for life, too.

The three ladies from Friends were amazing in showing how important female friendships are in life. Phoebe, in particular, often challenged the patriarchal views put forward by the men on screen. She also says in the show that her friends are the most important thing in the world to her. It looks like, in real life, this is the case too. Courteney and Lisa often post photos together on social media, and Courteney even appeared on Lisa's TV show, Web Therapy, too.

Is this the most powerful female team in showbiz?

Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Maya Rudolph stole the show at this year's Oscars, and reminded everyone why they are known for being the funniest people around. Between them, they have hosted SNL, and created and starred in Mean Girls, 30 Rock, and Bridesmaids! These women are showing us that it is possible to pull each other up, rather than hold each other down. By supporting each other, they open up the way for more women to join them.

The Sisterhood lives on.

America Ferrera, Amber Tamblyn, Alexis Bledel, and Blake Lively all starred together as best friends in the The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants movies. Although Alexis Bledel was already known for her role in Gilmore Girls, for the other three, it was their first big break. The friendship in the movie is unstoppable and spoke to millions of teenagers in the way it captured that feeling of youthful friendships, and it looks like it hasn't stopped there! The four of them can regularly be seen hanging out and supporting each other on social media. This is what real friendship is about.

Make it last forever, friendship never ends.

Of course, no list of female friendships would be complete without mentioning the original founders of girl power: The Spice Girls. This girl band encouraged a generation of young girls to support and love each other - and to put each other before men! It was a worthy lesson and one that not enough people speak up about.

It's no wonder that women prefer their best friends.

Friends are there for you in a way that a partner can't be. They are there through thick and thin. You can truly be yourself with them, showing your best and worst, and you know they'll love you no matter what. Sure, partners are great, but it's your best friend who truly has your back. Who wants to speak to their bestie right now and go over this list with them? Which best friends do you think resemble you the most?
