Today is National Coming Out Day!
It's a special day that takes place every year to celebrate people coming out as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer. It was founded back in 1988 by the psychologist, Robert Eichberg, and activist Jean O'Leary. They wanted to encourage queer people to come out to their friends and family members in an effort to fight against stereotypes.
These days, many people see National Coming Out Day as the perfect time to celebrate their own stories of coming out and raise awareness of the LGBT community. Unfortunately, there are plenty of stories about people coming out, who are met with ignorance. Luckily, there are also plenty of friends and family members who don't totally suck and who are there to offer support when their loved ones need it.
