Going to the movies is a pastime that's filled people's weekends for nearly a century. But it's a pastime that is becoming increasingly redundant. Now though, movie theaters are making changes and we suddenly feel like taking a trip to the movies.

Have you ever thought that you would go if only the screen was bigger, the food was better, the seats were more comfortable, or the experience was altogether more unique? Well, now you can. We've put together a list of the best movie theaters around the world, including the Swiss cinema that has actual beds!

But first, let's take a look at which movies you could see this year.

The new Avengers movie needs to be seen on the big screen.

Few movies have ever been released to as much anticipation as Avengers: Endgame. It blew up the box-office and people can't believe that the epic end is finally here. But that’s not the only movie that people are excited about this year.

May the force be with you.

This Christmas will see the release of the ninth chapter of the Star Wars franchise: Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The Star Wars movies are definitely meant to be seen on the big screen. As our favorite characters shoot through the stars in a faraway galaxy, it feels far more lifelike as the screen expands around you.

Who is excited for this one?

This year will see the release of Tarantino's tenth movie, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. It is set in 1969 and follows the lives of an actor, played by Leonardo Di Caprio, and his stunt double, Brad Pitt. Starring Margot Robbie alongside this iconic pair, this movie looks like it will feature the best of Tarantino. Funny, epic and with a punchy soundtrack, this movie is set to be an instant classic.

2019 is the year of the franchise.

As budgets are getting tighter, movie companies are trying to squeeze everything they can out of the franchises that they already own, and we're not complaining. We are seeing a return of Toy Story, Frozen, IT, and Men in Black. The new MiB will be called Men in Black International and it will be the first Men in Black movie without Will Smith or Tommy Lee, although it will still star Emma Thompson. Add to that Tessa Thompson, Chris Hemsworth and Liam Neeson and this movie looks set to be just as good as its predecessors.

Hakuna Matata.

This July, we will get to see the live-action re-make of The Lion King. Following in the steps of Dumbo and The Jungle Book, this will follow the original storyline very closely, but with (what looks like) real lions instead. And the cast looks incredible. Donald Glover and Beyonce are going to voice Simba and Nala, while James Earl Jones will be reprising his role as Mufasa. It will also star Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and John Oliver. We couldn't be more excited for this remake, but it makes us think about when we last saw The Lion King, back in 1994 and we still aren't over that.

Cinemas used to be like this.

There's a reason that they're called movie theaters; they used to look way more like regular theaters than the cinemas that we have these days. With an intermission and welcome music, going to the movies used to be a very different experience.

Some people would even go to drive-ins.

With fewer resources, but more space, drive-ins were the perfect way to let people watch movies in remote locations. These days, people prefer to focus on the quality of the screen and sound, rather than watching through a car windscreen but we'd totally be up for bringing these babies back.

Who can afford to go to the movies these days?

Most of us have the same idea in our heads when we think about going to the movies. The seats are a bit old, people can block your view or be annoyingly loud, and the snacks are extremely over-priced. Sure, the screens are good, but it seems like an unreasonably expensive activity.

We can just watch movies at home.

With the arrival of Netflix and other movie streaming services, a lot of people think that they might as well just wait a couple of months and watch the movie at home instead. It's cheap, it's comfortable and we can wear our pyjamas. But we've compiled a list of cinemas that are changing all of that. They're full-on experiences that are actually worth paying for. Wait until you see the cinema in Switzerland with actual beds!

You've never had a view like this at the cinema before.

Cine Thision is in Athens, but you don't have to feel bad about going to see a movie rather than sight-seeing if you visit this place while travelling. This cinema has views of the Acropolis and the Parthenon, from the cinema seats. It shows classic movies and new releases outside, where you can take in the best of Greek culture, all while at the cinema.

This cinema provides a real experience.

The Rajmandir cinema is in Jaipur in India. It can seat up to 1,200 people, so if you are looking for a quiet cinema experience, this might not be the one for you. But going to the cinema here is about experiencing the movie with the crowd. People heckle, clap and roar with laughter. It allows you to enjoy the movie in a whole new way.

A cosy space in a crowded city.

The Uplink-X cinema is in Tokyo, Japan, one of the biggest cities in the world. Yet this cinema seats only forty people. The chairs can be moved around, too, so that people can sit in the groups that they want and can interact with each other.

This is bigger than real life.

Sydney is home to a lot of wonderful attractions and architecture, but it is also home to the world's biggest screen. This Imax experience has a screen that is 117x97 feet. It's so big that it would be difficult to take in what's going on at both ends of the screen. You wouldn't want to watch a horror film on this screen, that's for sure.

Do you want to go to the busiest movie theater in the world?

This cinema combines the IMAX experience of Sydney (although the screen is smaller, at 92x 72 feet), with the experience of the Rajmandir movie theater. The Prasad cinema in Hyderabad is the third largest screen in the world, but it also shows 3-D movies. It is so popular that they receive around 1,500 telephone reservation requests every day. So if you want to go to this cinema, make sure you book far in advance!

You won't get your average cinema food here.

We are all used to over-paying for popcorn, candy, and soda at the cinema, but this cinema has taken it to a whole new level. It's called Cine de Chef and it has a chef who was trained at the Park Hyatt Hotel, so you receive truly gourmet food here. Not only that, but the seats are super luxurious and were designed especially for this movie theater. This isn't the only movie theater in Seoul on our list either. It looks like we're going to need to make a trip to South Korea soon!

Relax with your pals at the hot tub cinema.

Originally in London, the hot tub cinema is now making its way to various locations around the world. The idea is simple: chill in a hot tub with your 5-7 of your friends and watch a movie. They have screens in a couple of different spots across the site so you can all see and you can have a beer while you watch! This is a great way to relax at the cinema.

Do you prefer something more traditional?

The Castro theater in San Francisco is a far more traditional movie theater than most are today. It is set in a beautiful old building and first started showing movies back in 1922. It's just as decadent on the inside and provides a wonderful movie experience. It even has sing-along screenings of musicals, if you want to enjoy your old favorites with some atmosphere. If you want something more modern though, the next few screens are for you.

It's official, we live in the future.

This cinema experience at 4DX Seoul is known as 4 dimensional. Not only are you watching in 3-D, but you can also smell what's being shown on the screen. It even includes wind and water effects that are being shown in the movie, and the seats move. It is an incredibly immersive experience. But if you are looking for something more comfortable than immersive, the Swiss cinema below is the one for you.

Do you want a truly immersive experience?

The Secret Cinema is based in different secret locations in London, and it's a hands-on event. Everyone has to arrive dressed in costume and there's actors dotted around who act out parts of the movie to make you feel like you are living it before the movie is shown on the big screen. It allows you to experience the movie in an incredibly unique way.

This looks like the most comfortable movie theater in the world.

Cinema Pathe in Switzerland has just opened up a new VIP hall, and it looks incredible. Instead of movie seats, it's got double beds. They've even got little bed-side tables on either side, to make you feel more at home.

It's a real VIP experience.

Not only do you get to relax on the beds to watch the movies, you are also provided with a pair of slippers. There's no need to worry about queues either! Food and drink is included in the price and it's brought straight to you.

That's not the only luxurious room that they've got, either.

As well as the room full of beds, they've also got a room full of comfortable couches. This room looks perfect for kicking back and enjoying a movie in comfort, but with a screen that provides an impeccable view.

There's even a room just for kids.

For children's movies, you can use the special kids' screen. There's bean bags and a ball pit, so kids can enjoy the movie or play a little if they get bored. It's perfect. Plus it means that you won't get any kids ruining your viewing experience in the other screens.

It's got an IMAX too!

This cinema really is amazing. As well as the bed screen, the sofa screen, and the kids' screen, it's also got an IMAX. So you can decide if you want to kick back and relax, or if you want to have a more immersive experience.

Are cinemas going to make things a little too cosy?

We mean, in a dark room, lying next to each other, watching a romantic scene, things could start to get too intense for some couples. This Twitter-user is worried that a cinema with beds will just encourage people to get it on.

It's a fairly expensive experience.

Going to the cinema is already too pricey for most, so $73 seems especially steep. It's about three times as much as regular tickets, but it does look like you get three times the experience, with the bed, slippers, and food deliveries. If you're just going to fall asleep, though, that's a pretty expensive nap, especially when you would probably fall asleep just as easily on a bus journey...

The cinema is making hygiene a priority.

This Twitter-user makes a good point - sitting in used bed sheets sounds less than desirable. But the Pathe cinema has already thought of this. They are going to wash all the sheets after every viewing and provide clean sheets. So it shouldn't be an issue, although you never know…

Some people think it's practical.

Sat in a comfortable seat in the dark, with a chance to finally relax, it can be difficult to stay awake in any movie theater. Maybe this is a way of anticipating the inevitable.

It could be a good way to keep relationships in a healthy place.

How many times have you been dragged to see a movie that you have no interest in seeing? Now you can agree to go and know that you'll be super comfortable and can enjoy the experience, regardless of the movie. Plus, you can still reclaim the brownie points for going by persuading them to see something you want to see. It's a win-win.

Hands up those who want to go to the cinema now!

These movie theaters are absolutely incredible, and with so many amazing movies coming out this year, it seems crazy not to go. Movie theaters are no longer just a place to see the latest release. You can go and have a truly unique experience that you could never get from your couch at home. Excuse us while we just go and book some tickets…
