For most of us, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a staple childhood classic.
The story of greed, gluttony, and a giant chocolate factory… What’s not to love?
Critically acclaimed children’s author, Roald Dahl, who also brought us classics such as Matilda and The Witches, first wrote the story of Charlie Bucket and his quest to visit Willy Wonka’s infamous chocolate factory back in 1964.
So a movie adaptation was made in 1971, 7 years on from its initial publication.
Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory was the first attempt at bringing the children’s book to life…
And we saw as Hollywood legend, Gene Wilder, portrayed the role of the charismatic and slightly eccentric Willy Wonka.
Wilder completely killed it.
And therefore set the bar pretty high for any future adaption and remake attempts.
In the decades following on from its release, filmmakers far and wide left the tale of Willy Wonka firmly alone.
Because who can follow on from such a masterpiece?
And the darker, more gothic adaptation, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was released in 2005.
And, despite the edgy remake being a far cry from the 1971 version, he did a pretty good job at it.
Wonka fans have all been wondering the same thing – Surely it’s time for a TV series?
Well, we are going to be getting just that.
Netflix has announced that 2 animated series – one based on the world of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and another based more around the Oompa-Loompas – are in the works.
Well, to make things even more exciting, the streaming service has revealed that they are collaborating with the critically acclaimed filmmaker, Taika Waititi for the project.
Taika Waititi is a New Zealand filmmaker, and the mastermind behind the Academy Award-winning, yet ever so slightly controversial movie, Jojo Rabbit.
(You know, the one where a little boy’s imaginary friend happens to be Hitler. Yeah, that movie.)
And he is set to write, direct, and executively produce both projects.
But he will be delving deeper into the stories and histories of various characters.
“The shows will retain the quintessential spirit and tone of the original story while building out the world and characters far beyond the pages of the Dahl book for the very first time.”
“Finding just the right creative partner to bring Willy Wonka, Charlie and the Oompa-Loompas to life in animation was a daunting task…until Taika walked into the room,” said Netflix Vice President of Original Animation, Melissa Cobb.
“Then, it was really obvious. If Dahl had created a character of a filmmaker to adapt his work, I’m pretty sure he would have created Taika.”
Because Netflix have revealed that, following from Waititi’s adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, they will be embarking on an “extensive partnership” with The Roald Dahl Story Company.
This means that many more remakes are on the cards.
Including the likes of Matilda, The Twits, The BFG, and many others.
Waititi’s creative flair will be perfect for the chocolatey franchise.
And, though no release date has been confirmed, we can’t wait to see the finished result.
