Texas Senator Ted Cruz swatted away a reporter's simple request for him to wear a mask at yesterday's Senate presser...
And the senator's bold response has certainly divided opinion.
Here's the full story...
Now, although Ted Cruz is the Senator of Texas...
He's an unbelievably controversial man.
Although he failed to run for president in 2016 behind Donald Trump, Cruz has gone on to achieve a very successful career in U.S government and politics...
And the Republican has made quite the name for himself with his right-wing views and his hot and cold relationship with Trump throughout his controversial presidency.
But he's also made quite the tarnished name for himself over the years with some very eye-opening moves and opinions.
Not only is Cruz an avid supporter of the NRA, but he is now also a very loyal Trump supporter who rallied behind the scorned former POTUS when Joe Biden won the 2020 election.
Cruz provoked a widespread political and popular backlash after filing objections to Biden's victory certification...
The thing about @tedcruz and the #GQP overall is they believe that they can do whatever they want, betray the interests’ of their constituents, feed them lies & conspiracy theories, and ultimately, their voters will never abandon them.— Kurt Bardella (@kurtbardella) February 18, 2021
And when it came to the Capitol Hill riot on January 6th, the senator was slammed for "amplifying" the false claims of voter fraud that drove the thousands of Trump supporters to invade the scared political building on that day.
Things then got even worse for Cruz when Texas experienced its "big freeze" in January...
Hey @tedcruz I hope you are enjoying Cancun. Meanwhile at my house we are melting snow to use as toilet water because our town’s water system is down. But at least our power is working again after 31 hours off. Enjoy your vacation. It’s clear you don’t care. #ResignTedCruz pic.twitter.com/RlEY5g2GMe— Amy Heiss (@HeissofTexas) February 18, 2021
And as thousands of families were suffering without electricity or running water in below freezing temperatures, Cruz instead packed his bags and boarded a plane with his family heading for Cancun, Mexico.
Residents of Texas were left feeling furious with their senator, to say the least...
"It was obviously a mistake. In hindsight, I wouldn't have done it."— ABC News (@ABC) February 19, 2021
Sen. Ted Cruz returned to Texas a day after flying to Mexico with his family as his state reels from a historic storm that has left hundreds of thousands of people without power. https://t.co/7ndXNlccsO pic.twitter.com/GVglObf9tc
And although Cruz hastly returned to Texas and issued a half-hearted apology, the damage had been done.
Cruz's reputation has seriously been dragged through the mud in the last few months...
And now, it seems as if he's firmly cemented himself as someone who doesn't feel wearing face masks is necessary!
During a Senate presser yesterday, Cruz was quick to dismiss a reporter's request for him to wear a face mask...
And it's seriously divided opinion.
Many feel that Cruz did nothing wrong by refusing to wear a mask...
okay why? if he's vaccinated, no need for mask.— xdaedonx (@xdaedonx) March 25, 2021
i find it hard to believe a senator could be denied access to a federal building for something as stupid as "but the mask rule!". he's representing his people.
It’s a control thing. He’s been vaccinated! Glad he didn’t back down!— Shawn (@ShwnJhnsn1) March 24, 2021
If he got the vaccine and tested negative for covid, why would he need to wear a mask?— Football Team Fan (@PFF_Warriors) March 24, 2021
But a vast majority have been left, yet again, disgusted by Cruz's rude behavior.
Shocking that the guy who would fly off to Cancun while his constituents suffer through a massive crisis would be rude and inconsiderate to the press.— Orange Owl (@orangeowl18) March 24, 2021
In a federal building, it is a requirement that he wear a mask.— Robert Connelly (@LegalRobert) March 24, 2021
In case anyone thinks Cruz is correct, he's not. He's lying, especially about CDC guidance, not to mention Biden's executive order. Also, one-quarter of members of Congress are refusing to get vaccinated, so...— David Badash (@davidbadash) March 24, 2021
What gives Cruz the right to put that reporter at risk?
As a Texas resident, I feel constantly embarrassed for the state's contribution to the rest of the country: Ted Cruz.— Locksmith (@locksmithPrime) March 25, 2021
Ted makes me nauseous. I'm pretty sure nobody sincerely likes him. Why is he in public service? 🤮— annie gray 🇺🇸 (@snooze_cat) March 24, 2021
Someone should tell Ted that CDC guidance is to continue to wear a mask even after you’re vaccinated.— Jada 🌊💙🌊💙 #StopVoterSuppression #GOPCorruption (@DogJada6275) March 24, 2021
So he's been vaccinated. Does he really think that means HE can't spread Covid to any of the reporters who may NOT be vaccinated yet? I know he's an idiot, but good lord!!!— DiNozzo's Probie (@MaryH319) March 24, 2021
As Cruz stepped up to the microphones, an unidentified reporter is heard asking him, "Would you mind putting a mask on?".
"Yeah, when I'm talking to the TV camera, I'm not going to wear a mask," Cruz responded, "All of us have been immunized, so!".
The reporter then tells Cruz that it would make the press feel better if he wore a mask.
"You're welcome to step away if you'd like," Cruz said before chuckling, "The whole point of the vaccine... CDC guidance is what we're following."
It all felt very sarcastic...
Question: Would you mind putting on a mask for us?— Acyn (@Acyn) March 24, 2021
Ted Cruz: Yeah when I’m talking to the TV camera, I’m not going to wear a mask pic.twitter.com/sUoKjvACcz
What do you think? Do you think Cruz isn't in the wrong for not wearing a mask? Or do you think he should have taken more responsibility during such turbulent times.
