Every other week, it seems like there’s a new movie on Netflix that people just can’t stop talking about.
Right now, fans cannot stop raving about a horrifying disaster film that is actually inspired by a true story.
Originally released in 2023, The Abyss is directed by Richard Holm and written by Holm, Robin Sherlock Holm, and Nicola Sinclair.
The story is set in Kiruna, Sweden and follows people who are struggling to survive after a catastrophic rock burst that threatens to swallow up the town.
Kiruna is a real city!
But, throughout the rest of the film, the plot doesn’t exactly stay true to real life.
The Abyss stars Tuva Novotny as Frigga, Kardo Razzari as Dabir, Felicia Maxime as Mika, and Peter Franzén as Tage.
The action film is centered around a series of seismic events.
But, before Frigga–a security manager at the Kiruna mine–can understand the damage it has caused, it’s already much too late.
A rock ends up bursting in the mine and leads to sinkholes, with Frigga having to figure out how best to evacuate the town and save as many people as possible.
The story the film is loosely inspired by took place four years ago.
The real-life event happened after an earthquake was triggered by extraction activity in the local Kiruna mine.
The earthquake reached around a 4.8 reading on the Richter Scale.
It’s safe to say the filmmakers deviated from real life by adding in lots of fictional elements, but that’s to be expected in a dramatic movie like this one.
“This had me on the edge of my seat!” one fan said of the film while discussing it on a forum.
“Yes watched this last night and yes, it’s a sitting on the edge of your seat kinda movie,” another added.
Critical reception
Interestingly enough, not everyone is as fond of the film, receiving an 18 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
But, with such strong reactions in both directions, it seems like a film that will suck you in–good or bad.
