A Texas bakery recently sparked a ferocious wave of backlash after it made Pride-themed cookies but miraculously, the internet decided to show its support for the business in the best possible way.
Here’s the full story…
Now, for those of you that might not be aware, we’re in the midst of Pride Month – the most fabulous time of the year.
June has, for years now, been the month of Pride.
People across the globe use this month to celebrate the impact that the LGBTQ+ community has had on the world.
Pride is the month where people can really celebrate being themselves…
And individuals from all walks of life, who have faced prejudice at home and in their day-to-day lives, join in with the month-long celebration.
Though Pride hasn’t always been so positive.
Pride month was initially created to commemorate the Stonewall riots, which saw members of New York’s gay community protest and fight for their rights.
At that time, Americans were living under an anti-gay legal system and on the morning of June 28th, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn, which catered for LGBTQ+ and other minority groups at the time.
This protest would eventually lead to gay liberation…
And the modern fight for LGBTQ+ rights in the U.S began with this riot.
Within 6 months, 2 gay activist organizations were formed in New York and, within just a few years, gay rights organizations were founded across the US and the rest of the world.
And every year, we see huge parties, parades, and tributes from all over the world.
Well, this year, Lufkin, Texas-based bakery Confections decided to pay their own tribute to those celebrating Pride by selling some delicious Pride-themed cookies.
The cookies, that were baked in the shape of a love heart, featured the classic Pride rainbow colors and the bakery promoted them on their Facebook page by writing:
“More LOVE. Less hate. Happy Pride to all our LGBTQ friends! All lovers of cookies and happiness are welcome here.”
Although the bakery meant well by their new product and was just trying to be supportive…
Sadly, they were met with a huge wave of backlash and criticism over the cookies.
So much so that on the following day, the bakery posted an update stating that they had lost a “significant amount of followers” because of their last post…
And that one customer had even canceled an order of 5 dozen summer-themed cookies because of their support for the LGBTQ+ community.
“My heart is heavy. Honestly I never thought a post that literally said more love less hate would result in this kind of backlash to a very small business that is struggling to stay afloat and spread a little cheer through baked goods.”
We can’t imagine how difficult this must have been for the owner of the bakery, who later identified herself as a lady named Dawn…
But remarkably, the response to Dawn’s heartfelt post was staggering.
The small bakery, which had been “struggling to stay afloat” through the last year received an outpouring of support from across the country…
And after their Facebook posts received tens of thousands of likes and comments, the bakery has found itself busier than ever with eager customers.
Dawn then took to Facebook to announce they had “sold out” completely.
“All this attention on our small business is very humbling. Makes me nervous! Those who know me (Dawn) know how shy I am. In the eleven years we’ve been open we’ve never seen anything quite like this. We (my sister and co-owner Miranda and our fabulous baker Felicia) are just so humbled and grateful and moved by this outpouring of love. The last several people in our shop put Money on their credit card for us to donate because there was nothing left to purchase.”
She then confirmed they had donated the funds to local animal rescue centers.
This just goes to show the true powers of the internet…
And how incredible communities such as these can make a huge difference for smaller, independent businesses.
