The Best Shows and Movies to Watch on Netflix While Self-Isolating

After being in self-isolation for over a week now, I’ve exhausted all my other hobbies. Yes, I’ve tried baking, drawing and even tried starting to write a novel, but the creative juices just aren’t flowing right now. So, after much deliberation, I’ve decided to give into my binge-watching habit.

If you’re considering joining me, then don’t worry, I’ve got you. Here’s a list of some of the best TV shows and films to watch on Netflix over the isolation period with their IMDb ratings. I’ve even thrown some hidden gems in there. You can thank me later.

Rating: 8.1 / 10. “A group of ambitious law students and their brilliant criminal defense professor become involved in a twisted murder plot that promises to change the course of their lives.” It stars Viola Davis, of course, you should watch it.

Rating: 7.7 / 10. “A young programmer is selected to participate in a ground-breaking experiment in synthetic intelligence by evaluating the human qualities of a highly advanced humanoid A.I.”

Rating: 8.7 / 10. “Follows the political rivalries and romance of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign and the events that shaped the second half of the twentieth century.” I’m currently halfway through Season 2 and I’m hooked.

Rating: 5.4 / 10. “Two con women – one low rent and the other high class – team up to take down the men who have wronged them.” I watched this today and you know what? It definitely deserves a higher rating.

Rating: 7.9 / 10. “Teresa flees Mexico after her drug-runner boyfriend is murdered. Settling in Dallas she looks to become the country’s reigning drug smuggler and to avenge her lover’s murder.”

Rating: 7.5 / 10. “In a post-apocalyptic world, a family is forced to live in silence while hiding from monsters with ultra-sensitive hearing.” Silent movies were never my thing until I watched this one.

Rating: 6.2 / 10. “Inspired by real events, Hache is the story of Helena, a woman catapulted to the h****n trafficking business in the Barcelona of the 60s.” If you’re going to watch anything, this is it.

Rating: 8 / 10. “Noah Baumbach’s incisive and compassionate look at a marriage breaking up and a family staying together.”

Rating: 7.8 / 10. “A dangerously charming, intensely obsessive young man goes to extreme measures to insert himself into the lives of those he is transfixed by.” As much as I tried to avoid watching You, I finally gave in to the urge and it was the best decision I ever made.

Rating: 7.7 / 10. “A year in the life of a middle-class family’s maid in Mexico City in the early 1970s.”

Rating: 8.3 / 10. “A teenage boy with a sex therapist mother teams up with a high school classmate to set up an underground sex therapy clinic at school.”

Rating: 7.2 / 10. “A teenage girl’s secret love letters are exposed and wreak havoc on her love life.” If you’re in the mood for young love, a bit of culture and an overall feel-good vibe, then this is the perfect watch for you. Also, there’s a second film!

Rating: 7.6 / 10. “When three working-class teenagers begin attending an exclusive private school in Spain, the clash between them and the wealthy students leads to murder.” Three seasons full of tension, suspense, acceptance. I highly recommend.

Rating: 7.3 / 10. “Hal, wayward prince and heir to the English throne, is crowned King Henry V after his tyrannical father dies. Now the young king must navigate palace politics, the war his father left behind, and the emotional strings of his past life.” Timothee Chalemet and Robert Pattinson in one film? Yes, please!

Rating: 8.1 / 10. “Convicted of a decade-old crime of transporting drug money to an ex-girlfriend, normally law-abiding Piper Chapman is sentenced to a year and a half behind bars to face the reality of how life-changing prison can really be.” Raw. Real. Entertaining.

Rating: 7.6 / 10. “Against all the odds, a thirteen-year-old boy in Malawi invents an unconventional way to save his family and village from famine.” I watched this overwhelmingly heartwarming film last night and I can assure you, it needs to be added to your list.

Rating: 8.3 / 10. “Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts.” Two words: Henry Cavill.

Rating: 6.1 / 10. “When Mari Gilbert’s daughter disappears, police inaction drives her own investigation into the gated Long Island community where Shannan was last seen. Her search brings attention to over a dozen murdered sex workers.” This movie is a recent heartbreaking addition to Netflix.

Rating: 8.6 / 10. “Set in the late 1970s, two FBI agents are tasked with interviewing serial killers to solve open cases.”

Rating: 5.8 / 10. “Disheartened since her ex-husband’s affair, Grace Waters feels restored by a new romance. But when secrets erode her short-lived joy, Grace’s vulnerable side turns violent.” I watched this, despite all the mixed reviews about it, and it was actually pretty good. It deserves a 6 rating at least.

Rating: 8.8 / 10. “A gangster family epic set in 1919 Birmingham, England; centered on a gang who sew razor blades in the peaks of their caps, and their fierce boss Tommy Shelby.” A deserved rating.

Rating: 8.3 / 10. “In Nazi-occupied France during World War II, a plan to assassinate Nazi leaders by a group of Jewish U.S. soldiers coincides with a theatre owner’s vengeful plans for the same.” A few bad graphics, but well worth the watch.

Rating: 6 / 10. “Singles who want to be loved for who they are, rather than what they look like, have signed up for a less conventional approach to modern dating.” Apart from the major cringe comments coming out of the contestants’ mouths, I actually enjoyed watching their journeys to finding love.

Rating: 5.6 / 10. “When city girl Gabriela spontaneously enters a contest and wins a rustic New Zealand inn, she teams up with bighearted contractor Jake Taylor to fix and flip it.”

Rating: 8.7 / 10. “BoJack Horseman was the star of the hit television show “Horsin’ Around” in the ’80s and ’90s, now he’s washed up, living in Hollywood, complaining about everything, and wearing colorful sweaters.”

Rating: 7.4 / 10. “This intimate, in-depth look at Beyoncé’s celebrated 2018 Coachella performance reveals the emotional road from creative concept to a cultural movement.” Just when you think you couldn’t love Beyonce more…

Rating: 9 / 10. “Five teens from Harlem become trapped in a nightmare when they’re falsely accused of a brutal attack in Central Park. Based on the true story.” I have never been so moved by a piece before.

Rating: 6.6 / 10. “Five years after an ominous unseen presence drives most of society to suicide, a mother and her two children make a desperate bid to reach safety.”

Rating: 7.9 / 10. “A cynical young woman in New York City keeps dying and returning to the party that’s being thrown in her honor on that same evening. She tries to find a way out of this strange time loop.”

Rating: 6.5 / 10. “Two corporate executive assistants hatch a plan to match-make their two bosses.” I’m going to re-watch this today.

Rating: 8.7 / 10. “Flashing between past and present, a fractured family confronts haunting memories of their old home and the terrifying events that drove them from it.” I can’t wait for Season 2. This was a great watch.

Rating: 6.6 / 10. “A couple tries to spice up their marriage in a remote lake house; after the husband dies unexpectedly, the wife is left handcuffed to their bed frame and must fight to survive and break free.” The concept is almost funny when you read about it… But it’s a good film.

Rating: 8.6 / 10. “A new Fab Five set out to Atlanta to help the city’s straight men refine their wardrobes, grooming, diet, cultural pursuits, and home décor.” It’s more than just a makeover, I’ll tell you that for sure.

Rating: 8.5 / 10. “A Polish Jewish musician struggles to survive the destruction of the Warsaw ghetto of World War II.” My heart broke into a million pieces watching this.

Rating: 8.4 / 10. “The rise of the Guadalajara Cartel as an American DEA agent learns the danger of targeting narcos in Mexico.”

Rating: 7.9 / 10. “When Bryan sets out to uncover the truth about doping in sports, a chance meeting with a Russian scientist transforms his story from a personal experiment into a geopolitical thriller.”

Rating: 6.2 / 10. “At a predominantly white Ivy League college, a group of black students navigate various forms of racial and other types of discrimination.” I’ve recently added this to my TBW list and I’m very excited.

Rating: 7.6 / 10. “Behind Vatican walls, the conservative Pope Benedict XVI and the liberal future Pope Francis must find common ground to forge a new path for the Catholic Church.”

Rating: 8.8 / 10. “A Congressman works with his equally conniving wife to exact revenge on the people who betrayed him.” A classic.

Rating: 7.3 / 10. “A young girl risks everything to prevent a powerful, multinational company from kidnapping her best friend – a fascinating beast named Okja.” Any film by Bong Joon-Ho is a masterpiece.

Rating: 9.5 / 10. “A high school chemistry teacher diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer turns to manufacturing and selling methamphetamine in order to secure his family’s future.” Another classic.

Rating: 6.1 / 10. “Meet a new kind of action hero. Six untraceable agents, totally off the grid. They’ve buried their pasts so they can change the future.”

Rating: 7.4 / 10. “Follows the lives of suburban families whose secrets and lies are made public by the appearance of a stranger.” This one will be bound to keep your interest.

Rating: 6.9 / 10. “Danny Ocean rounds up the boys for a third heist after casino owner Willy Bank double-crosses one of the original eleven, Reuben Tishkoff.” Films 11 and 12 are also on there too.

Rating: 8.2 / 10. “When the world’s most controversial guru builds a utopian city deep in the Oregon country, conflict with the locals escalates into a national scandal. A true story.” This mini-series had be hooked from the get-go.

Rating: 3 / 10. “During their first year of high school, four best girlfriends face off against the domineering student body President, who wants to split them up into different social cliques.” As if this got a rating of 3. Don’t insult the Bratz like that, please.

Rating: 8.8 / 10. “When a young boy disappears, his mother, a police chief, and his friends must confront terrifying supernatural forces in order to get him back.” It’s popular for a reason.

Rating: 6.9 / 10. “Story of a wonderful little girl, who happens to be a genius, and her wonderful teacher vs. the worst parents ever and the worst school principal imaginable.” My childhood nightmare and hero in one film.

Rating: 8.5 / 10. “A group of unique robbers assault the Factory of Moneda and Timbre to carry out the most perfect robbery in the history of Spain and take home 2.4 billion euros.” So worth adding to your list and not just because Miguel Herrán is in it.

Rating: 7.4 / 10. “A look at iconic pop artist Taylor Swift during a transformational time in her life as she embraces her role as a singer/songwriter and harnesses the full power of her voice.” If you’re not a Taylor Swift fan, you’re about to be.

Rating: 8 / 10. “A look at the personal and professional lives of a group of women who perform for a wrestling organization in Los Angeles during the 1980s.”

Rating: 6.9 / 10. “This movie chronicles how Chetan met his wife and the difficulties they faced due to their cultural differences.” Sometimes you just need a casual love story to take your mind off of things.

Rating: 8.4 / 10. “A love story develops between Captain Yoo Shi Jin, from South Korean Special Forces and Doctor Kang Mo Yeon, who works as a Surgeon at Haesung Hospital in Seoul. They will find themselves in the middle of great events and deadly dangers, both in their Motherland and in the fictitious, war-torn country of Urk.”

Rating: 7.9 / 10. “Allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Empire, and France are surrounded by the German Army, and evacuated during a fierce battle in World War II.” Bonus Points: Harry Styles features in this war-time thriller.

Rating: 8.2 / 10. “A family of power-hungry thousand year old vampires look to take back the city that they built and dominate all those who have done them wrong.” From the very first episode, I was hooked. And have been for 3 seasons…

Rating: 7.7 / 10. “As Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg creates the social networking site that would become known as Facebook, he is sued by the twins who claimed he stole their idea, and by the co-founder who was later squeezed out of the business.” I watch this every time I’m bored.

Rating: 8.8 / 10. “An anthology series exploring a twisted, high-tech multiverse where humanity’s greatest innovations and darkest instincts collide.” Miley Cyrus’ episode was amazing. And weird. The best combination.Rat

Rating: 8.5 / 10. “Explores the early relationship between the renowned psychiatrist and his patient, a young FBI criminal profiler, who is haunted by his ability to empathize with serial killers.”

Rating: 5.9 / 10. “Routinely exploited by her wicked stepmother, the downtrodden Sam Montgomery is excited about the prospect of meeting her Internet beau at the school’s Halloween dance.” Duff and Murray deserve a 10 / 10.

Rating: 8.1 / 10. “Set in a future where consciousness is digitized and stored, a prisoner returns to life in a new body and must solve a mind-bending murder to win his freedom.”

Rating: 8.0 / 10. “A frontiersman on a fur trading expedition in the 1820s fights for survival after being mauled by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team.” As if you haven’t watched the movie that gave DiCaprio his Oscar.

Rating: 8.4 / 10. “Jake Peralta, an immature, but talented N.Y.P.D. detective in Brooklyn’s 99th Precinct, comes into immediate conflict with his new commanding officer, the serious and stern Captain Ray Holt.” You can’t go wrong here.

Rating: 8 / 10. “The story of King George VI, his impromptu ascension to the throne of the British Empire in 1936, and the speech therapist who helped the unsure monarch overcome his stammer.” Watch this before you watch The Crown.

Rating: 8.2 / 10. “James “Ghost” St. Patrick, a wealthy New York night club owner who has it all, catering to the city’s elite and dreaming big, lives a double life as a drug kingpin.”

Rating: 8 / 10. “A five-year-old Indian boy is adopted by an Australian couple after getting lost hundreds of kilometers from home. 25 years later, he sets out to find his lost family.” I’ve gotten emotional over movies before, but this one took things to a whole other level.


Rating: 6.8 / 10. “A traumatized veteran, unafraid of violence, tracks down missing girls for a living. When a job spins out of control, Joe’s nightmares overtake him as a conspiracy is uncovered leading to what may be his death trip or his awakening.”

Rating: 6.8 / 10. “Story of Roman teenagers on their journey of self-discovery.” I’ve just started the first season and I can’t wait to see what happens in this. The aesthetics are crazy.

Rating: 7.2 / 10. “Cambodian author and human rights activist Loung Ung recounts the horrors she suffered as a child under the rule of the deadly Khmer Rouge.” Emotional. Deadly. Entertaining.

Rating: 8.1 / 10. “In this weekly show, the former Daily Show correspondent Hasan Minhaj brings his unique comedic voice and storytelling skill to explore the larger grim trends shaping our fragmented world.” Hasan Minhaj makes politics fun… Almost.

Rating: 8.1 / 10. “With his wife’s disappearance having become the focus of an intense media circus, a man sees the spotlight turned on him when it’s suspected that he may not be innocent.” A feminist icon.

Rating: 8.1 / 10. “A coming-of-age story about four bright, street-savvy friends navigating their way through high school in the gritty inner city of South Central Los Angeles. Dealing with the danger of getting their friend out of a gang and friends turning into romance, danger is constant.”

Rating: 6.6 / 10. “The film follows the 2000 K-141 Kursk submarine disaster and the governmental negligence that followed. As the sailors fight for survival, their families desperately battle political obstacles and impossible odds to save them.” Movies based on historical events are literally my go-to.

Rating: 7.6 / 10. “The heroic story of Ertugrul Ghazi, the father of Osman (Uthman) who founded the Ottoman Empire.” With each season featuring over seventy episodes, this one will be bound to keep you busy.

Rating: 8.1 / 10. “In the antebellum United States, Solomon Northup, a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery.”

Rating: 8.4 / 10. “Two London drug dealers ply their lucrative trade at a public housing estate in East London.” I highly recommend Top Boy.

Rating: 7.8 / 10. “At the age of 21, Tim discovers he can travel in time and change what happens and has happened in his own life. His decision to make his world a better place by getting a girlfriend turns out not to be as easy as you might think.” Such a feel-good film about love and commitment.

Rating: 8.3 / 10. “A father recounts to his children, through a series of flashbacks, the journey he and his four best friends took leading up to him meeting their mother.” I’m re-watching this for the 1000th time.

Rating: 6.5 / 10. “A young man and woman decide to take their friendship to the next level without becoming a couple, but soon discover that adding sex only leads to complications.”

Rating: 8.5 / 10. “Based on the Nirbhaya case, Delhi Crime follows the Delhi Police investigation into the finding of the men who perpetrated this crime.” The rawness of this show really makes it worth the watch.

Rating: 6.3 / 10. “In 1905, a drifter on a dangerous mission to rescue his kidnapped sister tangles with a sinister religious cult on an isolated island.” Religious cults? I’m in.

Rating: 8.4 / 10. “A coming-of-age story about a group of college athletes who are fighting for their dreams, experiencing and finding love in the process, and growing every step of the way.” Another hidden gem.

Rating: 6.7 / 10. “Based on real events, Francesc Boix is a Spaniard inmate in the Nazi concentration camp of Mauthausen in Austria who tries to save the evidences of the horrors committed inside its walls.”

Rating: 8.0 / 10. “Exploring the rich culture of street food in some of the world’s most colorful cities.” This one is for all you mukbang lovers out there.

Rating: 7.1 / 10. “Egyptian Prince Moses learns of his identity as a Hebrew and his destiny to become the chosen deliverer of his people.” I’m not one for animations, but this one really got me.

Rating: 9.2 / 10. “An animated series that follows the exploits of a super scientist and his not-so-bright grandson.” Weird and wonderful.

Rating: 7.9 / 10. “In 1980s Italy, romance blossoms between a seventeen-year-old student and the older man hired as his father’s research assistant.” Hands down, one of the best films of last decade.

Rating: 8.6 / 10. “Q, Sal, Joe and Murr are real-life best friends who love challenging each other to the most outrageous dares and stunts ever caught on hidden camera.” If you’re in the mood for 4 idiots doing weird challenges, this one’s bound to make you feel good.

Rating: 6.8 / 10. “A rich high school student tries to boost a new pupil’s popularity, but reckons without affairs of the heart getting in the way.” A classic. A way of life. Get on it.

Rating: 7.4 / 10. “Privileged teens living on the Upper East Side of New York can hide no secret from the ruthless blogger who is always watching.” If you haven’t seen Ed Westwick in his prime, then you really haven’t lived.

Rating: 6.3 / 10. “A couple stops at a gas station, where their 6 y.o. daughter’s arm is fractured. They hurry to a hospital. Something strange is going on there. The wife and daughter go missing.” I was confused the entire way through this film… even at the end.

Rating: 8.7 / 10. “The trials and tribulations of criminal lawyer Jimmy McGill in the time before he established his strip-mall law office in Albuquerque, New Mexico.”

Rating: 7.4 / 10. “After the death of her father, a young Spanish woman discovers a partial letter. As she searches for the answers, she embarks on a journey that takes her back to Africa, where she unfolds the secrets of her family.” I cried. That’s all I’m going to say.

Rating: 8.1 / 10. “A series about a powerful friendship that blossoms between a tightly wound widow and a free spirit with a shocking secret.”

Rating: 8 / 10. “An introvert freshman is taken under the wings of two seniors who welcome him to the real world.”

Rating: 7.8 / 10. “A young, devout Catholic woman discovers that she was accidentally artificially inseminated.” And the rest is now history…

Rating: 7.4 / 10. “In 2002, an artistically inclined seventeen-year-old girl comes of age in Sacramento, California.”

Rating: 8.2 / 10. “Lucifer Morningstar has decided he’s had enough of being the dutiful servant in Hell and decides to spend some time on Earth to better understand humanity. He settles in Los Angeles – the City of Angels.” I’m here for Tom Ellis and that’s it.

Rating: 7.5 / 10. “Set in 1950s London, Reynolds Woodcock is a renowned dressmaker whose fastidious life is disrupted by a young, strong-willed woman, Alma, who becomes his muse and lover.” I adored this movie; It was artistically brilliant.
