Smithers, a character who’s been in The Simpsons show for a very long time is finally set to get his very own boyfriend after coming out to Mr. Burns way back in 2016.
Smithers came out to his boss, Mr Burns, in a 2016 episode and told him he had feelings for him…
Sadly, Mr. Burns rejected him.
But just a few years later, it seems as though he’s going to get a happily ever after…
Because Smithers is now officially taken!
While the show might be fictional, Smithers’ storyline represents real-life stories for a lot of young men, including for writer Rob LaZebnik’s son, Johnny.
Speaking to the New York Post, Rob said he wanted his son to be a part of the famous show to reprsent the community.
“I am a Midwestern guy, so I don’t tend to wear my emotions on my sleeve, but I thought, ‘What better way to tell my son I love him than to write a cartoon about it?’ Sometimes TV can have a real impact on people’s thinking,” he said.
And Johnny himself also had a little something to say about the upcoming 21st November episode too.
“So often, gay romances are a subplot or alluded to or shown in some kind of montage or as a punchline.
“What I think I was really excited about, with this episode, we get to see – without spoiling too much – the beginning, middle, and who knows how it ends of a gay relationship, of really getting into the nitty-gritty of how gay people date, how they meet, what it’s like,” he explained.
And we are absolutely here for it.
Because Smithers is finally catching a break! We can’t wait to watch the episode on November 21st.
