There's a Good Reason That Hollywood Stopped Casting Jim Carrey | 22 Words

Jim Carrey is known as one of Hollywood's funniest men. But in recent years, things have taken a real downturn for the star...

Jim Carrey is one of Hollywood's best-loved actors.

He first rose to fame in gross-out comedy movies such as Dumb & Dumber and Ace Ventura, where his seemingly elastic face and never-ending supply of energy gained much fan acclaim.

Since then, he's shown a remarkable range.

Carrey has starred in films across a wide range of genres, including a range of excellent romcoms like Bruce Almighty.

But Carrey doesn't shy away from more dramatic roles, either.

He gained a lot of critical praise for his role in dystopian reality television satire, The Truman Show. He also played the romantic straight-man lead in artsy classic, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Alongside his acting success, Carrey has had to deal with a certain level of fame.

Particularly in the '90s, Carrey was one of the most recognizable faces in the celebrity world. His hugely successful film roles led to a legion of loyal fans.

At first, Carrey seemed to court the public's attention.

But in recent years, he's become a lot more private and less keen on holding his spot in the public eye. In fact, he's often quite critical of society's obsession with fame.

Carrey has often been keen to troll the paparazzi.

Here he is in 2008, wearing then-girlfriend Jenny McCarthy's bathing suit - perhaps as a commentary on how women are treated by the media, or perhaps just to induce a laugh.

But there's no shortage of snaps of Carrey.

If you're as famous as he is - and attend high profile celebrity events with such regularity - it makes sense that you'd be pretty used to getting your picture taken.

He's certainly a recognizable face.

But behind the scenes, it seems we haven't really seen much from Carrey.

He's been absent from our screens for some time.

And now, we know why.

There are many reasons for this.

And people don't know what to make of them ...

So let's start, shall we?

Here are the real reasons why Hollywood stopped casting Jim Carrey.

For one thing, he's just too polarizing.

People seem to either love or loathe the star - making him too high risk!

And while in the past, Carrey was a big box office draw ...

In recent years, that hasn't been the case.

His old movies would make bank.

Dumb and Dumber brought in $169 million.

But recent movies have just been far smaller in scale.

Like I Love You, Phillip Morris, which brought in a far smaller $20.7 mil.

Carrey also has a reputation of being difficult to work with.

After starring in Kick Ass 2, he refused to promote the movie as he disagreed with its violent content.

This sort of thing can really put directors off...

And make them more likely to go with a more malleable actor for a role instead.

Another thing that makes Carrey so difficult to work with?

He often has a rather method approach to his roles.

In Man on the Moon he fully embodied comic Andy Kauffman...

Which made him almost impossible to direct.

Footage of Carrey acting super strangely was taken at the time.

It eventually was made into a documentary, Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond, which makes for very uncomfortable viewing.

Personal issues have also plagued Carrey's life and career...

And he's actually been quite vocal about his ongoing struggles with depression in the past.

"It all comes down to the same thing ... You are either in a loving place, or you are in an unloving place."

"If you are with me right now, you cannot be unhappy. It's not possible, just try."

A public breakup also didn't help his fragile mental state.

In 2010, Carrey and Jenny McCarthy split, and he turned to creative pursuits to try to get through the tough times.

In fact, Carrey's relationship past has been plagued with issues.

McCarthy has called him "a hard guy to date."

"Jim can run hot and he can run cold."

via: Shutterstock

"He is someone who desperately needs to be with someone, then just as desperately needs to be alone. But at the same time, he can be a very loving, very compassionate guy."

His method acting has led him to lose himself before.

"What do I believe? What are my politics? What do I like and dislike?" he's asked.

And there's one big controversy that has dominated Carrey's life.

Back in 2015, his ex-girlfriend Cathriona White tragically took her own life.

But the tragedy didn't end there.

The following year, Carrey was sued by her ex-husband for wrongful death.

He unbelievably claimed Carrey had infected White with STDs...

Plus supplied her with the painkillers she used to complete suicide.

But Carrey fought back.

He launched a lawsuit claiming the family was trying to extort him.

The case was dismissed on both sides in 2018.

But we can't imagine this was an easy thing for Carrey to go through!

But one of the major reasons Carrey isn't getting casted anymore?

via: Shutterstock

Well, it seems like he doesn't really want to!

His focus has shifted massively in recent years.

via: Shutterstock

He's fully enjoying other artistic pursuits nowadays.

He's enjoying life behind the camera.

He also works as a mentor for other young actors - including big names like Chris Pratt.

He's even made a documentary about his art called I Need Color, which focuses on his passion for art and sculpting.

"And the answer to both of those questions is: nothing, no reason, as far as I am concerned."

After all the fame, he seems to be enjoying fading from the limelight.

via: Shutterstock

"I guess just getting to the place where you have everything everybody has ever desired and realizing you are still unhappy."

It seems it's not easy being Carrey.

He lives life from a melancholic disposition through and through.

We hope he's doing ok!
