Trans Woman Creates World's First Underwear Collection for Transgender Children | 22 Words

It isn't always easy for people to come out and identify as transgender to their friends and family.

Gender dysphoria, especially in young children, can cause severe confusion and anxiety if not approached in the correct, sensitive way. Even though the men+ community is stronger and more accepted than ever, trans people still face hate and discrimination, and this can be an especially terrifying ordeal for young people.

One trans woman has created her own business in aid of children who may have gender dysphoria and she feels as though she can truly help to make a difference in a trans child's life.

What exactly is "gender dysphoria?"

Gender dysphoria involves a conflict between a person's sex and the gender with which he or she identifies with. People with gender dysphoria experience high levels of discomfort with their own bodies, and they often report feeling as if it isn't their own.

It is more commonly known as being "transgender."

People who are transgender more than often realize that they are from a very young age - children are able to experience gender dysphoria and this is when the majority of trans people realize this conflict.

It is a heartbreaking reality that many trans children face rejection from their families.

According to the Human Rights Campaign, studies have shown that familial rejection can lead to the LGBTQ+ youth engaging in behaviors and activities that endanger their health, trigger depression, and other mental health issues, and, in some extreme cases, can lead to homelessness and suicide.

Family support is one of the most important things for a child coming out as trans.

Child welfare expert, Caitlin Ryan, stated that “family acceptance predicts greater self-esteem, social support, and general health status," for LGBTQ+ youth. “It also protects against depression, substance abuse, and suicidal ideation and behaviors - issues for which transgender youth are at disproportionate risk."

A transgender child needs love and support.

Parents must respect the wishes of their child by doing simple things such as using the child's preferred gender pronoun and name, reassuring them about the love and support that they will continue to receive, and, most importantly, educating themselves about issues surrounding the trans community.

Coming out as transgender and beginning the transition will never be easy...

Despite this being what a person desires, the first few steps into transition are never easy, especially for a child. Enduring taunting in the school corridors from their peers who are too nieve to understand the situation is a sad reality for many trans children.

Thankfully, the LGBTQ+ community is bigger than ever today.

There are countless organizations around the world that work hard together purely to support people, especailly children, of the transgender community.

Meet Carmen Liu...

Carmen is a twenty-seven-year-old designer living in London, U.K, and is a transgender woman.

She has built a successful life for herself...

She is the founder of GI Collection, which is a clothing and lingerie line designed specifically for people of the transgender community.

There is more to transitioning than surgery and hormones...

"There are countless obstacles to being transgender, from a lack of adequate psychological support to a scarcity of information on what’s required to transition safely," the GI website reads. "There is so much more to it than simply visiting a doctor for surgery and hormones."

GI's lingerie brand is designed specifically for women who haven't had surgery...

The collection has been designed to promote self-confidence and love in individuals' own bodies, no matter their shapes or sizes. Genital surgery isn't an option for many trans people, so the lingerie line has been created to be accessible for anybody regardless of what gender they identify as.

Carmen's collection has proved to be a success.

She has strived to try to make the lives of trans people easier and has proved that people of the community deserve to feel glamorous and confident.

Her collection has ventured into a new area of fashion...

Carmen has created a fashion line targeted specifically at young transgender girls - "Carmen Liu Kids." According to the brand, 1-3% of children are affected by gender dysphoria and the new collection is designed to help these children to feel less isolated and more comfortable with their bodies.

The range is due to be released later this fall.

The collection is still in production but Carmen has displayed her high hopes for the brand and is excited to unveil the new and unique products.

This collection is something that Carmen has always wanted to do...

Speaking to Metro, Carmen said: "From the beginning, an underwear line for trans kids was one of the first and more important products I wanted to design and launch."

Carmen didn't live her childhood as her "true gender..."

"Unfortunately, I never lived my childhood as my true gender and this is something I can never get back," she explained. "For me, to be able to provide the world’s first underwear line for the rapidly increasing amount of trans kids globally is my way of helping them avoid losing their childhood as their true gender."

She wants to raise awareness of the multiple problems surrounding the trans community.

"Not only do I aim to provide trans-specific products for kids, but I will also increase the needed awareness of the ever-increasing problems for trans children and their families."

Stemming from personal experiences...

"I am already doing just this for trans women worldwide and now it’s necessary for me to expand my experience to trans children," she went on to say.

The children's collection differs slightly from the adult collection...

Whilst the adult GI Collection offers "tucking" elements, the children's collection will not share this feature due to safety issues.

The needs of trans children were constantly in mind during the production of the product.

Carmen said: "I have designed the kids' underwear line with cotton and mesh fabrics, the designs differ from current kids underwear available on the market as they allow for greater hold and support for the lower body parts and are designed specifically for the needs of trans children."

A sensible and cautious approach...

"This will help with the symptoms transgender children can experience from gender dysphoria and avoid any public embarrassment they can feel," she said, "the design does differ from my trans women’s line, where full tucking is needed, this is because it is not safe for children at a young age to be tucking fully."

Carmen has stressed the lack of information regarding the trans community and she wants to make a change to this.

"I know there are a lot of people who are yet to understand why trans-specific products are necessary, I know that some of this is due to lack of information."

Carmen is simply wanting to help others who are going through exactly what she went through.

"One thing I always say to first help people is that trans girls and women have an additional body part that needs concealing," Carmen said.

She believes that the trans community deserves to have access to products that every other person uses.

"Lingerie/underwear does not solve our issues, lingerie/underwear is a basic human need which our community does not have access to," she went on to say.
