A U.S pageant winner has become the first transgender woman to compete in Miss USA.

Kataluna Enriquez, twenty-seven, was crowned Miss Nevada on Sunday and will now go onto the final that is being held on November 29th in Oklahoma.

Enrique beat twenty-one contestants to be named Miss Nevada at the event at Las Vegas' South Point Hotel Casino and made history as a transgender woman in the process.

She told the judges: "Today I am a proud transgender woman of color. Personally, I've learned that my differences do not make me less than, it makes me more than. I know that my uniqueness will take me to all my destinations, and whatever I need to go through in life."

"To my pageant mommy @rissrose2, no words can describe how much I am grateful of you. For your constant support, for welcoming me into your home, and feeding me nothing but love. Team @misssilverstate, you are all inspiring. your love, support, and sisterhood have healed many years of struggle. My times and giggles with y'all never be replaceable. To all the sponsors, Thank you."

"I couldn't have done it without your help. Huge thank you to everyone who supported me from day one. My community, you are always in my heart. My win is our win. We just made history. Happy pride. @missnvusa @missusa", she continued in her post.

For the ballgown round, Enrique opted for a sequined rainbow-colored gown she'd made herself to mark Pride month and let's just say, she looked amazing.

Sharing a photo of her dress on Instagram, Enriquez wrote a caption stating: "Gown made by me @katalunakouture. In honor of pride month, and all of those who don't get a chance to spread their colors." She followed this with 5 emojis making up the color of the pride rainbow.

"My community, you are always in my heart. My win is our win. We just made history. Happy pride." Enriquez wrote on another post.

Talking to KVVU, Enriquez opened up about the challenges she's faced: "I didn't have the easiest journey in life. It was a struggle for a moment. I struggled with physical and sexual abuse. I struggled with mental health. I didn't have much growing up. I didn't have support.

"But I'm still able to thrive, and I'm still able to survive and become a trailblazer for many."

She added: "Don't let your differences determine what you're capable of.

"Your differences are anything that makes you unique, and you are capable of anything as long as you believe in yourself."

Her followers on Instagram have given her nothing but support for her historical win as a transgender woman.
