When America’s sweetheart, Jennifer Aniston, and Hollywood heartthrob, Brad Pitt, got hooked up by their respective agents in 1998, the world went crazy.
For a while, they seemed to be the total golden couple of the 00s.
But nothing lasts forever, and the pair eventually separated in 2005, much to the heartbreak of what seemed to be the entire world. Even worse? It looked as though there was a rather insidious reason for the split – Brad Pitt falling for femme fatale, Angelina Jolie.
But now Brangelina are over, fans are convinced Jen and Brad are more than just good friends. And images from last night’s SAG awards seem to confirm the theory.
Jen was still filming Friends and had just completed shooting classic Rom-Com, The Object of My Affection, with Paul Rudd.
Brad, on the other hand, was wrapping up filming Meet Joe Black (I don’t remember it either..) and was about to start shooting for Fight Club. The 2 kept their relationship a secret at first- you know, probably wanting to avoid any public speculation (if only they had known!).
Only 3 months later, during a Sting concert (of all places), the loved-up kids announced their engagement. Stepping on stage and waving the engagement ring to crowds of applause, it really did seem to be a Hollywood-fairytale.
Sadly, there does not seem to be any video footage of the Sting concert, I guess this was a time before concerts revolved around the crowd filming e v e r y t h i n g.
The ceremony itself cost a hefty one million dollars, with $76,000 spent on security. Guests were asked to sign confidentiality agreements and airspace surrounding the ceremony was restricted.
Brad and Jen sure were sticklers for privacy!
The Aniston-Pitt privacy stance is perhaps the reason that there remains so much mystery around what the marriage was really like.
In an interview given by Aniston in September 2001 with Rolling Stone Magazine, the star talked about being 1 year into her marriage with Brad and all appeared pretty darn rosy.
Aniston’s love for Brad is apparent throughout the interview, she can’t seem to help but bring him up at any given opportunity.
Do you remember when Brad did a cameo in Friends in November 2001?
“The One With The Rumor” starred Pitt as one of Ross Geller’s old school friends, Will Colbert.
Pitt’s character appears blatantly cold to the confused Rachel, who can’t remember Hot Will from school. It transpires that, back in the day, Hot Will was not-so-hot, and Rachel had not been so nice. Pitt’s character then proudly confesses that he and Ross had spread a rumor about Rachel back in high school, much to her dismay.
Watching this Friends episode back now, in 2019, the foreshadowing as to the souring of Brad and Jen’s marriage is palatable…
The bitter rumors that circulated from both Brad and Jen’s respective parties post-breakup are, twenty years on, yet to settle.
Some 2 years after the Friends cameo, the cracks start to appear in the fairytale romance of Brad and Jen.
Talking to W Magazine, Aniston was asked if Brad was the love of her life. She responded with an awkward rambling answer that ends with, “He’s certainly a big love in my life..”
In fairness to Jen, it was one of those awkward questions that puts you in a corner. Kinda like when someone asks what your dreams for the future are…
We’ve all been there Jen!
It’s just that most of us don’t have a load of reporters asking us these big, life-defining, deep questions. Who knows? Maybe all was still good between the 2 at this point.
Jen even made suggestions that the duo were interested in having babies in 2004. In an interview with The Guardian, Aniston discussed the ending of Friends and how she was looking forward to slowing down and starting a family.
We’ve got to that point in the love story of Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt that we never want to get to… it’s all downhill from here, guys (or is it?).
Well, let’s just cover what must be covered… Let’s talk about Mr and Mrs Smith.
It’s May 2004, and “happily” married Brad Pitt starts filming the assassin/spy flick alongside the single (and admittedly.. very beautiful) Angelina Jolie (it’s those darn cheekbones). Anyway blah, blah, blah, the 2 co-stars spent an awful lot of time together and got on very well.
The press had a field day during the shooting of Mr & Mrs Smith and rumors about how close Angie and Brad were getting circulated across the world.
By January 2005, Aniston and Pitt had announced their separation. In their joint statement, the couple contested the tabloid rumors and insisted that they would remain friends (yeah, yeah…)
“We would like to announce that after seven years together we have decided to formally separate. For those who follow these sorts of things, we would like to explain that our separation is not the result of any of the speculation reported by the tabloid media. This decision is the result of much thoughtful consideration. We happily remain committed and caring friends with great love and admiration for one another. We ask in advance for your kindness and sensitivity in the coming months.”
Over and over again, friends and family of the newly-separated couple insisted to press and media that Brad and Jen really were best friends and would remain so.
Personally, I think the trouble wasn’t Jolie herself, but with what she represented.
Already a mother to one (Jolie had adopted her first child, Maddox, in 2002 and was raising him as a single parent when she met Brad in 2004), Jolie represented motherhood and thus saw Brad turn in to a “dad” with family values.
The narrative thus ensued that Jen never wanted children, which was why Brad moved on to Jolie, someone who did want a family.
Brad went on to adopt Maddox, and a further 2 children with Jolie – Zahara in 2005 and Pax in 2007. The 2 also have three biological children together: Shiloh, born in 2006, and twins, Knox and Vivienne, born in 2008.
Aniston’s frustration with the public’s fascination concerning whether she will or won’t have babies came to a head in 2014, with an interview with Today wherein she slammed the press and their assertions.
She stated, “My value as a woman isn’t measured by motherhood.”
That being said, Aniston’s refusal to out-rightly refute the claims that her marriage to Pitt ended because she didn’t want children, as well as her claims that motherhood won’t define her, further fueled the fires on the generally-accepted rumor.
Aniston publicly slammed Pitt and Jolie for their insensitivity following the break-up.
We mean, fair play to Jen! She has every right to be upset after Jolie publicly discussed the building of feelings between herself and Pitt whilst filming Mr & Mrs Smith (which we all know was still during Jen and Brad’s marriage..)
Huffpost notes that Jen told Vogue, “I felt those details were a little inappropriate to discuss. That stuff about how she couldn’t wait to get to work every day? That was really uncool.”
We all know that living under public scrutiny is no easy feat, but having your seven-year marriage blown up with the world watching is a whole other kettle of fish.
And then to have your ex’s new partner publicly romanticize what was quite clearly an affair must have hurt quite a bit.
The divorce seemed rather messy, with allegations of substance abuse problems and issues between Brad and the kids coming to the fore.
Brad and Jen seem to have managed to maintain a close friendship.
Or, as some suspect, something more …
The backstage pictures snapped of Brad and Jen have got the whole internet talking.
And then as Jen started to walk away, Brad pulled her back in for more lols.
The Hollywood Reporter also shared this picture of Brad watching Jen’s acceptance speech for Best Female Actor in a Drama Series. He’s so proud!
The pictures have truly set the internet alight.
The pictures seem almost as though they were artistically posed by the pair.
What does it all mean?!
Although, tbh, we think Brad and Jen’s is more dramatic and heartwrenching.
We’re all equally obsessed with this pair, even more than twenty years on!
Something deep within us all is still rooting for these two!
No comment from us on this one!
Is this the first sign of something new?
We wonder if Brad is starting to regret his decisions …
Is this a sign of one man hanging on (hopelessly) to the past? We hope not.
Jen’s clearly thriving – time to throw her a curveball?
Maybe we’re just reading way too much into this short interaction.
(But we secretly hope we’re not!)
