Val Kilmer is set to return as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, but there will be a big difference in his role.

It’s reported that producers were not keen on recasting him in the role, due to the actor’s lack of voice.

Kilmer was diagnosed with throat cancer back in 2014, and underwent a tracheotomy.

The operation was successful, but it caused irreparable damage to Kilmer’s vocal cords, leaving him only able to speak via a voice box.

So for all of Kilmer’s dialogue in the new movie, special AI had to be used to enhance his voice.

“I’m grateful to the entire team at Sonantic who masterfully restored my voice in a way I’ve never imagined possible,” Kilmer said.

“As human beings, the ability to communicate is the core of our existence and the effects from throat cancer have made it difficult for others to understand me. “

“The chance to tell my story, in a voice that feels authentic and familiar, is an incredibly special gift.”

“People around me struggle to understand me when I’m talking. But despite all that, I still feel I’m the exact same person. Still the same creative soul.”
