What The Avengers Would Look Like If They Were Cast In The '90s | 22 Words

The Avengers: Endgame has been shattering box-office records and is set rack up the biggest global gross amount ever. It has had an unbelievable hype around it, and after twenty-one previous MCU movies, people can't wait to find out what happens in the grand finale.

One man, Mat, has had a different approach to the Avengers than the rest of us. Instead of speculating about what will happen next in the MCU universe, he has reimagined, through his artwork on his Instagram, House of Mat, who would be in the Avengers if it had been cast in the '90s.

The actors that he has picked for Thor and Captain America are just perfect!

Wakanda Forever.

Chadwick Boseman plays the king of Wakanda, known as Black Panther. Before joining the MCU he was best known for his role as James Brown in Get Up and Thurgood Marshall in Marshall.

Could the American Gangster be a better fit?

In the reimagined 90s version, Mat thinks that Denzel Washington could be a good fit as the Black Panther. He has been nominated for 8 Academy Awards, of which he has won 2, for Training Day and Glory. He's also won Academy Awards for Glory and Malcolm X, among others.

Bruce Banner is currently played by Mark Ruffalo.

Mark Ruffalo plays the Hulk, a tortured scientist who hates what he has become and doesn't know how best to deal with his situation. Before becoming the Hulk, he was known for his role in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, teen movie 13 Going on 30, and Scorcese's Shutter Island.

Would David Duchovny do a better job?

In Mat's reimagined '90s version, he has cast David Duchovny as the Hulk instead. These days, he is known for playing the lead character in Californication, but back then he was best known for his roles in Twin Peaks and Red Shoe Diaries.

The Scarlett Witch is a force to be reckoned with.

Mary-Kate and Ashley's younger sister Elizabeth Olsen plays the Scarlett Witch in the Avengers series. Before her role as the Scarlett Witch, she was best known for her lead role in Martha Marcy May Marlene, and for starring alongside Bryan Cranston in the Godzilla remake.

Could Alicia Silverstone argue her way out of trouble?

Mat has chosen Alicia Silverstone to replace Elizabeth Olsen in the imagined '90s remake. She was huge in the 90's for her role in Clueless. She would have been a great addition to the cast for some laughs.

Antman makes the Avengers far more humorous.

Paul Rudd brings plenty of humour to the franchise as Antman. He was also in Clueless in the 90s, but his career has really taken off since the turn of the millennium with roles in Anchorman, The 40 year old virgin, Forgetting Sarah Marshall and I Love You Man, not to mention his recurring role in Friends as Mike.

Ben Stiller could do a similar job.

Ben Stiller is a household name, and he was back in the '90s too. Not only did he also have a cameo in Friends, and was pining after Cameron Diaz in There's Something About Mary, he even had his own comedy show: The Ben Stiller Show.

Science can be a super power.

Together, the Hulk and Antman show what science can achieve in the world of superheroes, while Black Panther takes on the more magical superpowers that we associate with god-like superheroes.

Any team alongside Denzel Washington would have a good chance of survival.

It's hard to imagine these guys in a movie together. Okay, so David Duchovny and Ben Stiller starred in Zoolander together, but Denzel Washington and Alicia Silverstone have each had very different career trajectories to the other two comedians.

The Falcon has a few co-stars in this movie.

Anthony Mackie plays Sam Wilson; when he flies, he is known as The Falcon. He starred alongside Matt Damon and Emily Blunt in The Adjustment Bureau, and also in the Academy Award-winning Hurt Locker. His co-stars from The Hurt Locker, Evangeline Lilly and Jeremy Renner are also in the Avengers. You'll never guess who Mat chose to replace them in the '90s version.

This would be a hilarious addition to the Avengers.

Mat has obviously based his re-imaginings on looks rather than personalities, as he has cast Eddie Murphy in the role of The Falcon. Eddie Murphy was one of the biggest stars around in the '90s, starring in The Nutty Professor, Doctor Dolittle, and Mulan, before taking on the voice of Donkey in Shrek.

It's hard to imagine Tony Stark's wit without Robert Downey Jr.

Robert Downey Jr. manages to bring an extra dimension to the Avengers franchise through his portrayal of Iron Man. It is something that he also achieved in his version of Sherlock Holmes and in Due Date. And he's not the only Sherlock Holmes star from the Avengers that has been reimagined.

Tom Cruise is ready to save the world.

Although he's typically a little less humorous, it does seem fitting to have Tom Cruise take on the role of Iron Man. It seems quite believable to have him star as the rich guy who spends his money on making himself a super hero. He was already huge in the '90s for his roles in Top Gun, Mission Impossible, and Jerry Maguire.

Chris Hemsworth is the perfect embodiment of a Viking God.

Chris Hemsworth played the Viking God Thor in the Avengers series. Standing at 1.90m with his blond hair and huge biceps, he looks the part even before the costume department reaches him.

There is no better option for Thor than this guy.

There's only one choice for the '90s replacement of Chris Hemsworth, and that's Brad Pitt. Although he is a few inches shorter, his blond hair and good looks more than make him worthy for the role of the Viking God. Back then he was known for his roles in Thelma and Louise, and Se7en, but later this year he'll be in Tarantino's latest movie, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. And wait until you see which '90s superhero his co-star DiCaprio has been cast as.

This is a fearsome set to be up against.

Iron Man and Thor together represent the fight between science and religion that is on-going in modern society. They show the pride, pitfalls and power of both. (We're not sure why Mat didn't re-cast Scarlett Johansson. Who would you put in the role? Could Cameron Diaz do it?)

This is a perfect summary of the '90s.

Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt actually starred together back in 1994 in Interview with a Vampire, and the two of them got on about as well as Iron Man and Thor, so it seems like they could be the perfect match for the '90s casting.

Tom Holland can't be trusted.

Although Tom Holland is still a very young actor, he has already starred in numerous movies, including In the Heart of the Sea, with Chris Hemsworth, and The Impossible, with Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts. However he is most famous, not just for his role as Spider-Man, but for not being able to keep a secret. There are numerous videos of him about to let out a spoiler, while fellow Brit, Benedict Cumberbatch, watches over him. You won't believe how good the '90s replacement of Benedict Cumberbatch is; it's perfect.

If only Michael J. Fox had the chance to be Spider-Man.

Before there were superheroes, there was Marty McFly. He went back in time with Doc. Brown's time-machine in Spielberg's seminal Back to the Future. Michael J. Fox is definitely the perfect choice for the mischievous, but well-intentioned Peter Parker.

Pepper Potts is a firm fixture in the MCU.

Something of a '90s star herself, Gwyneth Paltrow has been involved in seven of the MCU movies, starring as Iron Man's wife, Pepper Potts. Before this role, Gwyneth Paltrow was best known for her roles in Shakespeare in Love, View from the Top, and Austin Powers.

Is this who you would pick?

Sharon Stone got her first big break in Total Recall with Arnold Schwarzenegger, before starring in Basic Instinct. In 1996 she even received an Academy Award nomination for her role as Ginger McKenna in Casino. She is a great shout for the '90s version of Pepper Potts.

Our beloved Star-Lord is next up!

Guardians of the Galaxy's criminal-hero, Star-Lord, is played by Chris Pratt. The character is actually supposed to already be from the '80s, so it would be less of a stretch of the imagination for him to transform into a star from the '90s.

Could George replace the jungle for the galaxy?

Mat suggests that Brendan Fraser should play the '90s version of Star-Lord. With his roles in George of the Jungle and The Mummy it is easy to see him in his role!

Who doesn't truly believe that he is a genius?

Doctor Strange has been perfectly cast with Benedict Cumberbatch playing the brilliant scientist. Following his roles as Sherlock Holmes and Alan Turing in The Imitation Game, we already believed that he was a genius.

This would be an awesome swap.

The re-imagined '90s version of the Avengers sees Keanu Reeves in the role of Doctor Strange instead. Maybe it was because we already know him in a long coat. At the start of the '90s he was best known for his role as doofy Ted Logan from Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, but by the end of the decade he was better known for being Neo in the impossibly clever movie about reality, The Matrix.

Doctor Strange and Spider-Man for the win.

While these superheroes might seem like an odd match, at least when Iron Man isn't there to bring them altogether, Tom Holland and Benedict Cumberbatch make quite the pair in reality. In fact, people enjoyed the videos so much of Benedict Cumberbatch stopping Tom Holland from announcing spoilers that many have called for there to be a spin-off movie starring the two of them.

These four are a great fit for a '90s movie.

Brendan Fraser's and Sharon Stone's careers have slowed down somewhat in the last decade or so, but Keanu Reeves is continuing in his role as an ex-hitman, John Wick. Wait until you see which of Keanu Reeves' other co-stars from Speed and Johnny Mnemonic have been cast as in the '90s.

Vision is the genius behind the genius.

The character Vision is Iron Man's computer mind, J.A.R.V.I.S., in a new body, powered by the Mind Stone. He is played by Paul Bettany, who was also in A Knight's Tale alongside Heath Ledger, and Wimbledon with Kirsten Dunst.

We need this action star to save the world.

Dolph Lundgren first rose to fame for his role opposite Sylvester Stallone in Rocky IV. He then starred with Jean-Claude Van Damme in Universal Soldier and with Keanu Reeves in Johnny Mnemonic. No action movie from the '90s would be complete without him, so he is a great choice for Vision's recasting.

It is good news that this actor didn't need a British accent.

Don Cheadle plays Tony Stark's friend, James Rhodes, who becomes War Machine when he puts on his armour. He is known for his roles in Oscar-Winning Crash, Oscar-nominated Hotel Rwanda, and his role in the Ocean's Eleven series, with a notoriously bad British accent.

What do you think of this '90s character?

Mat has reimagined the '90s version of War Machine to be played by Cuba Gooding Jr. He starred alongside Tom Cruise in Jerry Maguire, and was also known for his role in Boyz in the Hood, and Men of Honour, alongside Robert De Niro.

The Wasp is one of the few female superheroes.

Evangeline Lilly first found fame when she starred in Lost as Kate Austen, and she also starred in The Hobbit and in the Academy-Award winning best picture, The Hurt Locker. These days she is best known for playing opposite Paul Rudd as the Wasp.

Sandra Bullock would have kicked ass in this role.

Sandra Bullock is a household name and is known for her incredible performances in movies like Bird Box, Gravity, and of course, her Oscar-Winning performance in Blind Side. Back in the '90s she was already a familiar face following her performances in Speed and Demolition Man. She would be perfect in the role of the Wasp.

Who could take over from Jeremy Renner?

Jeremy Renner has been nominated for two Academy Awards, following his roles in The Hurt Locker and The Town. He is also known for his roles in The Bourne Legacy, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, American Hustle, and 28 Weeks Later. His role as Hawkeye isn't an easy position to take over.

How great would this be?

Already considered a great actor back in the '90s, Johnny Depp was well-known for his roles in Platoon, Edward Scissorhands, 21 Jump Street, and Donnie Brasco, Mat wants to put him in his re-imagined '90s version of the Avengers. Having Johnny Depp on-screen always enhances the experience, so it would be fantastic to have him as Hawkeye.

Captain America is America's favorite hero.

Captain America is America's ultimate hero. He was once a soldier, and now he's ready to protect the Earth in any way he can. Although Chris Evans is best known for his role in the MCU, there is only one candidate who could play Captain America in a '90s remake.

Can you imagine if this happened?

Leonardo DiCaprio is perhaps the most loved actor of our time. He was first nominated for an Academy Award back in the '90s for his role in What's Eating Gilbert Grape, which he starred in with Johnny Depp. He was the star of the '90s with his performances in Titanic and Romeo + Juliet, and since then he has won numerous awards, including an Oscar for his role in The Revenant. He would be perfect as Captain America.

This is a formidable set of humans.

These heroes are the best representation of humanity in the Avengers franchise. They have mostly created their own superpowers and allow the audience to think that they could do the same.

This would have been the best team ever.

Can you imagine if we had Leonardo DiCaprio, Johnny Depp and Sandra Bullock in the Avengers team? Not only would it be unstoppable, but they would have an unbelievable grip on our emotions. Maybe it's a good thing that we have the current heroes instead... There have been some great ideas by Mat though!
