Prince Harry appeared this week on The Late Late Show with James Corden and he revealed exactly why he stepped down from the royal family.

Now, the whirlwind love story began back in 2016.

When Suits actress Meghan Markle started dating Prince Harry, her career as an actress seemed to be instantly swapped for a life fulfilling royal duties.

They married in May 2018...

Which made Meghan an official part of the royal family.

It was the most magical of days...

And Meghan was christened with her official title, the Duchess of Sussex.

The couple announced their pregnancy shortly after the wedding...

And Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor was born in May of 2019.

But even though the family seemed to radiate with happiness...

This was far from the case behind the scenes as Meghan was relentlessly attacked by the British press and public.

Anything she did or said...

The British media had something to say about it. Whether she was being branded as a diva, a control-freak, a "monarchy ruiner," and even a bad mother, Meghan received it all.

Even though Meghan bravely put a smile on her face throughout it all...

There was absolutely no doubt that she was struggling.

This is what lead to the couple to make the bold decision to step down from royal duties in January 2020.

In a joint statement, Harry and Meghan said that they wanted "a normal upbringing for their child" and they felt that spending their time between the U.K. and America would be much more appropriate for their family environment.

This came as a huge shock worldwide...

But nobody was more shocked than those in the royal family.

Apparently, the Queen wasn't notified of Harry and Meghan's plans to step down from the family until after their announcement on social media.

Her Majesty published a statement shortly afterward, which read: "Discussions with The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are at an early stage. We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through."

Harry's relationship with his brother William also reportedly came under strain following his departure.

The future King of England was reported to have distanced himself from Harry and Meghan, with claims surfacing that the pair didn't speak for months.

Even though the family is now residing in Los Angeles...

Meghan and Harry are still receiving a lot of heat from the British press for "breaking up the royal family."

The pair also revealed that they will be venturing into the world of TV and rumors began to surface that they had signed a multi-million dollar Netflix deal...

Leaving fans of the royal family completely baffled.

And not only that...

But their joint-biography, Finding Freedom, was a huge success in many parts of the world - especially here in the United States.

The pair seem to be living the lives they've always wanted in L.A...

And to make things even more exciting, they announced on Valentine's Day that they're expecting their second child together with the most beautiful photoshoot.

But the happiness among fans wasn't to last...

As last week, it was announced that Harry and Meghan will not be returning - officially - as working members of the royal family.

A statement from Buckingham Palace said the royals were "saddened by their decision" but that Harry and Meghan "remain much-loved members of the family."

"Following conversations with The Duke, The Queen has written confirming that in stepping away from the work of The Royal Family it is not possible to continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service," the statement read.

"The honorary military appointments and Royal patronages held by The Duke and Duchess will therefore be returned to Her Majesty, before being redistributed among working members of The Royal Family."

Predictably, the announcement triggered a media storm...

And among all of the love and support came the negativity and unbelievable surges of criticism... particularly toward Meghan.

Of course, this abuse is the kind of stuff that prompted Meghan and Harry to depart from their public life in the first place...

And we can't say we don't blame them for wanting more privacy as their own little family grows!

But ever since the dramatic departure, fans have been asking one thing...

Why exactly did they step down from the royal family?

We all know it was partly because of the relentless attacks made against Meghan by the British press...

But it turns out that Harry had a very specific reason behind the decision to step down.

Earlier this week, Harry appeared on The Late Late Show with James Corden in his first public interview since stepping down to chat about his new life in L.A.

The royal was interviewed by Corden on an open-top tour bus - all while drinking tea, of course - and he opened up about what life has been like for him, Meghan, and Archie in the last year.

At one point, Corden takes Harry to the original house from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air to suggest he buys it as a "real prince"...

And he even FaceTimes Meghan from her home in Beverly Hills where she is heard referring to Harry as "Haz."

So cute!

Corden asked Harry what a "regular night in" is like for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

"Depending on how the day has been and how busy it's been, we'll do Archie's tea (dinner), give him a bath, read him a book, put him down, go downstairs, Meg might cook a meal or we'll order a takeaway, go upstairs, go to bed, maybe watch a bit of Jeopardy! or Netflix."

Totally normal, right?!

Corden then asked the uncomfortable question, "What made you walk away from the royal family?"...

But Harry politely corrected him by saying, "I didn't walk away."

"It was stepping back rather than stepping down. It was a really difficult environment that I think a lot of people saw... we all know what the British press can be like! And it was destroying my mental health, I was like 'this is toxic!'"

"I did what any husband and father would do."

"I needed to get my family out of there!" he then said.

"But we never walked away. And as far as I'm concerned whatever decisions are made on that side, I will never walk away. I will always be contributing but my life is public service, so wherever I am in the world it's going to be the same thing."

"My life is always going to be about public service and Meghan signed up for that."

"The 2 of us enjoy doing that and trying to bring compassion and try to make people happy, and try to change the world in any small way we can," he explained.
