A thirty-three-year-old woman who contracted COVID-19 has tragically died after giving birth to her son who she never got to meet.

This is utterly heartbreaking...

The tributes have been quick to flood in.

Erica Becerra, thirty-three, recently gave birth to her son...

But tragically, her life came to an abrupt end thanks to COVID and her story is truly the most heartbreaking thing.

Erica recently made the move from Los Angeles to Detroit with her husband and 1-year-old daughter.

She was heavily pregnant at the time with her second child and, when she began to experience severe contractions in the first week of November, she spent 2 days in the hospital for observation before being sent home.

But soon after returning home, Erica started to show COVID-like symptoms.

Her brother, Miguel Avilez, spoke to BuzzFeed News about the events that then took place: "She called my mom that Monday morning [and said], 'Mom, I think they hurt me at the hospital, it hurts to breathe, it hurts to move, I don’t feel good.'"

By November 11th, the expectant mom's condition had deteriorated to such an extent that she had to be rushed to the hospital via ambulance.

After 3 days with no improvement, her doctors made the decision to induce labor. Baby Diego Antonio, named for his father, was born on November 15th and Erica was intubated immediately after giving birth.

This sadly meant Erica wasn't able to see her baby.

"Right after she gave birth to her son, they put her in the tube because her body wasn’t retaining oxygen anymore," Miguel told CNN. "And then after that, she wasn’t able to meet her newborn baby. From what the nurse told us, they were only able to put him up to her cheek [but] she wasn't conscious at the time anymore."

Erica's condition gradually worsened...

And her family desperately traveled to Detroit to be with her in her final days. "Towards the last moments, she was tearing up," Miguel recalled, "I know she heard us as we prayed for her, we talked to her, we comforted her in the last moments."

On Friday last week, the dreaded moment finally came.

Erica passed away in her sleep following "complications" from COVID-19 - she never got to meet her newborn son. "It’s sad, you know, you've got a lot of people who don’t understand what’s going on, think [the pandemic] is a joke until it happens to them or one of their family members," Avilez wrote on Facebook. "My sister would want me to help people, just like she did. I'm going to keep her name alive

"Her main concern was other people. For her, other people's happiness was her happiness," Miguel said of his sister. "She followed every rule in the book and she still ended up catching [the coronavirus].

Even as they mourn, Miguel and his family have said they want to share her tragic story to raise awareness of the deadliness of COVID-19.

"It’s sad, you know, you've got a lot of people who don’t understand what’s going on, think [the pandemic] is a joke until it happens to them or one of their family members," he wrote on Facebook. "My sister would want for me to help people, just like she did. I'm going to keep her name alive."

Rest in Peace, Erica.
