Last updated: 17 Jan 2023
In recent years, most modern phone manufacturers have stopped providing the charging block with their phones causing buyers to hunt down and buy them. However, many of us have no prior experience with it as we are used to them coming in a box with our new phones. So, how do you know which one to buy? There are plenty of charger blocks online that offer different amounts and capabilities. A good charging block should fit your charging cable, sit securely in the outlet, be able to travel, provide appropriate wattage, and come in various amounts or colors. You will find these characteristics and more in the list of our favorites.

Best Charger Block Buying Guide

Without having the charging block that came with your phone, it can be difficult to sift through the hundreds of phone charging blocks you find online. If you need help, here are some key characteristics to guide your decision:

  • Quickness: When you need to charge your phone in a pinch, you want it to move quickly, so you are ready to go in a few minutes. Do some appropriate research to find one that charges quickly, so you aren’t chained to the wall for a long period.
  • Heat: A charging pack that heats up a lot or one that heats up your phone a lot can be dangerous to both your phone and the outlet. To avoid a fire hazard, look for phone charging blocks that do not overheat your phone or the outlet.
  • Fitting Together: Another spot for malfunctions is the fit of the cord in the charging pack and the fit of the block into the outlet. To avoid your phone falling because something came unplugged, do proper research and find one that fits the best.
  • Proper Port: Not all charging cords are made exactly the same. To ensure you don’t have to spend more money purchasing the right cord to fit your block, check and see what kind you need before hitting that “buy” button.
  • Number of Charging Blocks: If you have multiple devices or multiple housemates and limited outlet space, multiple ports and multiple blocks may be helpful so everyone can charge their devices.
  • Portability: If you are someone who likes to take your charger with you to make sure you always have a full battery, or if you travel a lot and need to pack your charging block up, safe packing may be something high up on your list. Look for packs that are smaller in size or ones that have foldable prongs.

FAQ

Q: What wattage is right for my phone?

A: While it typically doesn’t matter if you are under the wattage for your phone (besides it charging slower), being over the wattage can be catastrophic to your phone battery. Most phones will come with the wattage listed in the safety pamphlet in the box with the phone and a tag on the appropriate charging cord. If you can’t find it on either, a quick internet search should be able to tell you what you need.

Q: What is the difference between a USB and USB-C?

A: You will notice that both a USB and USB-C phone charging block are included on our list. The difference is the shape of the part that goes into the phone charging block. If your charging cord is the same on both sides (a flat, sort of round metal rectangle), then it is likely a USB-C charging cord. If there is a larger square metal piece on one end, that is a traditional USB charger side.
